Yangjae buckwheat restaurant: mandu before clam kalguksu, Seonbawi
In short
Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is a buckwheat-focused Korean restaurant near Yangjaesiminuisup Station in Seocho, Seoul, and a branch of a buckwheat specialist near Seonbawi Station in Gwacheon. For dinner, the writer had buckwheat clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup, 13,000 won) and a giant mandu (dumpling) filled with meat and neungi mushroom (8,000 won). The giant mandu arrived before the kalguksu, and the clam-packed dried pollack broth with 100% buckwheat handmade noodles tasted clean and mild. With parking out front and well-spaced tables, Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch is an easy buckwheat kalguksu spot for an office meal or a family dinner.

I visited Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch (선바위메밀장터 양재점).

I had clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and giant mandu (dumplings) for dinner, and it was a mild, light meal. The restaurant is pleasant for eating, and the staff were friendly.

Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch opening hours
It's open every day, Monday through Sunday, from 09:00 to 21:00.

What's on the menu at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch?
It's a buckwheat restaurant where you can eat makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles), clam kalguksu, giant mandu, bossam (boiled pork wraps) and suyuk (sliced boiled pork). Buckwheat is gentle on the stomach, and there's a kalguksu that suits winter, so it was a hearty meal.

Photos of the dishes are displayed inside, which makes choosing easy. Even within buckwheat there's variety, like perilla oil, pollack and kalguksu, so it was nice to eat here.
Seonbawi Memil Jangteo Yangjae Branch was a warm kalguksu and giant mandu combo that suits a lunch in Yangjae.

Prices of the buckwheat clam kalguksu and giant mandu
The menu has Korean dishes made with buckwheat, and the prices are reasonable: buckwheat clam kalguksu is ₩13,000 and giant mandu is ₩8,000. You can see the buckwheat kalguksu in the menu photos beforehand, and it's the style loaded with clams.
The noodles are chewy in a refreshing broth, and the well-filled giant mandu went nicely alongside.

Atmosphere and seating
The restaurant is spacious and the tables are well spaced, so it was good for talking. It suits lunch near Yangjae Citizens' Forest, office-worker lunches in Yangjae, and family meals out.

From the detail page, I learned that Seonbawi Memil Jangteo is a buckwheat specialist near Seonbawi Station in Gwacheon, and the Yangjae branch is new. Buckwheat food usually makes people think of makguksu, but kalguksu made with buckwheat noodles is the appealing part here.

What does the buckwheat clam kalguksu (₩13,000) taste like?
The buckwheat clam kalguksu (₩13,000) at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo comes in a big bowl piled with clams. It looks just like the photo, and when I tried to portion out the noodles, clams got caught in the tongs, that's how generous it is.
The clam buckwheat kalguksu looks hearty, and the texture of the buckwheat noodles was good, maybe because they're handmade.

Dried pollack broth and 100% buckwheat handmade noodles
Besides plenty of clams, I could see황태 (dried pollack) in the broth. The broth has a dried pollack base, so it has a savory depth and feels like health food.
From the detail page, I learned they use 100% buckwheat noodles made in-house. So it has the mild charm of buckwheat noodles, unlike ordinary wheat kalguksu. Because they're handmade, the texture feels like son-kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup), and it goes well with the broth.

It's easy to portion out, the clams are easy to pick from their shells, and the broth is refreshing, so it's nice to eat.

The signature mildness of buckwheat pairs well with the savory clams. The weather was cold, and it was great for a filling meal. There's plenty of broth and plenty of noodles.
The broth is clear, so I think it would be good for eating with kids, and it's a meal adults enjoy too, so it suits a family meal out.

Is the giant mandu (₩8,000) a good side for kalguksu?
The giant mandu (₩8,000) at Seonbawi Memil Jangteo is a good side to order with kalguksu. It's a steamed-style giant dumpling filled with meat and neungi mushroom.
The mandu came out well cooked, so I could eat it right away, and they got it ready faster than the meal. The filling is generous, so it's tasty as a starter or alongside the kalguksu.
