Yeonnam-dong bakery: Korean-style rump bun & ang cream, Mandong Jegwa
In short
Mandong Jegwa is an unusual bakery in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, about 5 minutes from Hongik Univ. Station, with many breads made from Korean ingredients, like injeolmi bread and Ssuktteok Ssuktteok (mugwort rice cake bread). The writer bought five breads at Mandong Jegwa: Eongdeongi (rump bun), injeolmi bread, Ssuktteok Ssuktteok, ang cream and jalapeño ciabatta. The two best were the Eongdeongi, a chewy mochi-dough bun filled with condensed milk cream, and the ang cream, red bean paste with cream. If you like unusual breads, picking at Mandong Jegwa is genuinely fun.

Today I visited Mandong Jegwa (만동제과), a Yeonnam-dong bakery that people also call a Hongdae must-visit! I heard it has lots of unusual breads, and since I love offbeat food, I was super excited haha.
Mandong Jegwa hours and parking
Mandong Jegwa is open daily 11:00–21:00 and takeout is available. There is no parking.

There's no parking, and I heard you need to use a paid lot nearby. If you're coming by car, take note~!
Where is Mandong Jegwa in Yeonnam-dong?
The Yeonnam branch of Mandong Jegwa is about a 5-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station haha.
Inside and outside the Mandong Jegwa bakery

It introduces itself so honestly as a bakery, lol.

Can you eat Mandong Jegwa bread at Ediya Coffee?
Mandong Jegwa and Ediya Coffee seem to be collaborating lately 👍 If you order one drink per person at the Ediya Coffee Yeonnam-dong branch, you can eat bread bought at Mandong Jegwa there, and the counter provides plates, scissors and forks haha.

Mandong Jegwa breads you have to ask staff for
For the garlic baguette, cucumber baguette, cappuccino, onion bagel and basil tomato bread, you don't put them on the tray yourself; you tell the counter and the staff pack them for you. I think it's because their shape would get messed up if you loaded them yourself! Watch out for that.

What Korean-style breads does Mandong Jegwa sell?
Mandong Jegwa's ang cream (앙크림) is a bread with cream inside red bean paste, and it was so unusual that I wanted it lol.

There was a free sample too, so of course I tried it lol.

As the notice said earlier, you can't pick these up yourself; you tell the staff and they pack them for you!

I've seen red bean paste with butter a lot, but red bean with cream felt a bit unfamiliar, so I was curious lol. Ssuktteok Ssuktteok (쑥떡쑥떡) is, as the name says, a bread with mugwort, and since you rarely see it at ordinary bakeries, I couldn't resist my curiosity... and put it on my tray haha.

I was really curious about the yakbap (sweet rice with nuts and jujubes) bread too, but I held back for my wallet's sake T_T

Isn't the chestnut-red bean-mugwort bread (밤팥쑥) super unusual too? lol I think it's the first time I've seen chestnut + red bean + mugwort in one bread! I couldn't buy this one either because of my budget, but it's a bread I definitely want to try next time.

Eongdeongi (엉덩이, the "rump" bun) is love... ❤️ It's one of those breads I always buy whenever I see it at a bakery!

This is the injeolmi (roasted soybean powder rice cake) bread. Mandong Jegwa has lots of Korean-style breads like this, which I found unusual and great lol.

The 5 breads I bought at Mandong Jegwa, with prices
After much agonizing, I left Mandong Jegwa with 5 breads, and here's what I bought!
- Eongdeongi (rump bun) (₩3,500)
- Injeolmi bread (₩3,500)
- Ssuktteok Ssuktteok (mugwort rice cake bread) (₩4,900)
- Ang cream (₩3,500)
- Jalapeño ciabatta (₩4,800)
All five were really tasty, but if I had to pick my best two, they'd be these.
Best 1: Eongdeongi (rump bun), ₩3,500

Mandong Jegwa's eongdeongi has sweet condensed milk cream inside chewy mochi dough. Just from the photo and description... how could that combo not be good lol.
Best 2: Ang cream, ₩3,500

Mandong Jegwa's ang cream was super moist and soft,,,, (it melts in your mouth T_T)

The red bean paste and cream combo here is fresh yet so harmonious, so I totally recommend it haha.
Is Mandong Jegwa worth it? Final verdict
- Lots of unusual breads you rarely see at ordinary bakeries, so choosing is fun
- All five breads I bought were satisfying, but personally eongdeongi and ang cream are the best!
- You can enjoy everything from chewy textures to moist, soft ones
- A Yeonnam-dong bakery I recommend to people who like different kinds of bread 💕
Mandong Jegwa had so many breads with unique names and looks that just browsing was a joy! Each one has a distinct personality, so picking was fun lol. Even with uncommon ingredient combos, the flavor balance was good and I was more satisfied than expected,,, If you're looking for a special dessert in Yeonnam-dong, I recommend stopping by at least once 💕
