Dongtan, Hwaseong hot pot spot: spicy hanwoo motsunabe, Horangigul

I went to Horangigul (호랑이굴) in Lotte Department Store Dongtan at Dongtan Station and had beef gopchang (small intestine) hot pot and risotto!

Horangigul is inside Lotte Department Store at Dongtan Station, so it's easy to get to, and it's a great spot for a meal after shopping, a date or a family dinner. It's the first hanwoo daechang (beef large intestine) hot pot specialist in Korea!

Horangigul is open Monday to Thursday 10:30–20:00 (last order 19:00) and Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10:30–20:30 (last order 19:30). For parking, use the underground car park of Lotte Department Store Dongtan.

What is Horangigul like, and what's the atmosphere?

Horangigul serves a Korean reinterpretation of motsunabe, the Japanese offal hot pot, in a spicy gopchang and daechang style that the owners learned directly in Japan~ The main branch was listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey in both 2023 and 2024, and it's so popular that the average wait is long. It's a real Dongtan Station hot spot, hehe

Even the atmosphere was special!

It feels less like a typical gopchang restaurant and more like a Japanese izakaya (pub), and the space is clean and stylish, so I thought it would work well for a date~

I think the charm of Horangigul's menu isn't just the gopchang hot pot, but the way Korean and Japanese cooking come together~ Motsunabe is a hot pot dish that people love in Japan, and with a Korean spicy kick added, it feels both familiar and new!

The basic table setting is neat too! Maybe because it's inside a department store, the place is clean and the staff are friendly, and lots of families come.

How does Horangigul's hanwoo daechang gopchang hot pot taste?

This time I ordered Horangigul's signature hanwoo daechang gopchang hot pot! It looked generous right away, with big pieces of daechang and gopchang in the spicy broth, hearty just to look at, hehe

One spoonful and I could see why so many people come!

The broth was spicy yet deeply savory, not just painfully hot, with a charm that keeps you eating~ The nutty richness of the daechang blended well into the broth, giving it a deep flavor!

The gopchang and daechang weren't tough but tender, great with the broth, and with so many ingredients inside it's satisfying as a full meal :) The savory sauce that comes with it is a real kicker too!

Is the cheese risotto (+₩4,000) worth adding to the hot pot broth?

The finishing risotto for Horangigul's gopchang hot pot costs an extra ₩4,000. I tried the risotto this time too, and finishing the hot pot broth with risotto gives a charm quite different from the start.

The spicy, rich broth mixes with the cheese and rice for a savory, filling finish!

At first the combination of gopchang hot pot plus risotto may feel unfamiliar, but once you try it you can see why it's recommended, hehe

If spice is a bit much for you, I especially recommend the risotto as a finish.

Horangigul Dongtan: overall verdict

What satisfied me most personally was that this isn't an ordinary gopchang hot pot but a special style of dish you can only get here! The spicy broth, the savory hanwoo daechang and the final risotto made for a solid overall set, and I was happy with it.

If you're looking near Dongtan Station for something special and filling, an izakaya-style place with a good mood, or a spot for a family meal or date, I'd recommend Horangigul! Please do visit once.
