Sindorim jokbal restaurant: Saturday friend reunion lunch, Sambaekga

Sindorim Sambaekga (신도림삼백가) is a Korean restaurant specializing in jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork wraps), about a 3-minute walk from Sindorim Station in Guro, Seoul. Over a Saturday lunch with a friend the writer hadn't seen in a while, the jokbal and the cold jokbal were moist with no porky smell, and side dishes like garlic chive kimchi, seasoned dried radish and geotjeori (fresh kimchi) kept the meal from ever getting tiresome. Sindorim Sambaekga is a good place to catch up with a friend over a jokbal lunch near Sindorim Station.

Euljiro boiled pork restaurant with a shabu-shabu finish: Baekok

Baekok Euljiro is a Korean restaurant serving pork gomtang (pork bone soup) and suyuk (boiled pork) on level B2 of Mirae Asset Center One, near Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Two diners shared the 49,000-won Donbok Jaengban (돈복쟁반) platter of boiled pork belly, pork neck, cheek and back ribs, then turned the leftover broth into shabu-shabu with mushrooms, tofu and vegetables. The Baekok Euljiro Donbok Jaengban is generous enough for three people, and its rich meat-and-vegetable broth was the standout.

Songdo Indian restaurant at night, onion kimchi refills: Manokamana

Manokamana Songdo Branch is an Indian curry restaurant on Haedoji-ro near Central Park in Songdo, Incheon. On a weekday at 8:30 pm, the writer had the 2-person SET B (38,000 won) with chicken masala curry, garlic naan, tandoori chicken, salad and lassi, and ate in peace because there were few other guests. A repeat visitor to Manokamana, the writer calls this the best curry they have ever eaten and strongly recommends Manokamana Songdo Branch.

Gyukatsu restaurant at Seoul Station: walk-in 1:30pm weekday, Ichigyu

Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch is a Japanese restaurant specializing in gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) and steki (steak), on basement level 1 of the LG Seoul Station Building in Jung-gu, Seoul. Around 1:30pm on a weekday, the writer walked in with no wait, ordered the striploin gyukatsu and striploin steki (19,000 won each) and grilled them with butter on a small tabletop brazier. Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch is a dependable gyukatsu spot near Seoul Station for an office lunch or a casual date.

Cheonggyecheon tonkatsu lunch: 1pm loin set before sell-out, Hunta

Hunta Euljiro (훈타 을지로) is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant in an alley near Cheonggyecheon, between Euljiro 1-ga Station and Jonggak Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. The writer arrived at Hunta Euljiro around 1pm after a morning Vietnamese class and ordered two loin katsu (rosu katsu) sets; many menu items were already sold out, and the loin katsu sold out right after the order. The tender pork cutlet, a broth like Korean radish soup and Hunta Euljiro's signature green onion kimchi make it a lunch spot worth coming back to.

Jonggak burger lunch after language class: El Taco combo, Reel Burger

Reel Burger Gwanghwamun is a handmade burger restaurant on Sambong-ro in Jongno, Seoul, between Gwanghwamun Station and Jonggak Station. After a morning Vietnamese class, the writer and her partner had an El Taco Burger combo and a cheeseburger for lunch, 37,800 won for both. With just a touch of cilantro, Reel Burger's El Taco Burger brings out taco flavor without being overwhelming and is strongly recommended.
