Japanese restaurant at City Hall: Asahi draft & first ochazuke, Tawa

Tawa is a Nagoya-style hitsumabushi (charcoal-grilled eel over rice) restaurant on basement level 1 of a building right by Exit 10 of City Hall Station in Seoul. After work, the writer dined solo at Tawa, starting with an Asahi draft beer and eating the charcoal-grilled eel rice bowl four ways: plain, with nori and wasabi garnishes, and finally as ochazuke. Even the first-ever ochazuke was satisfying, making Tawa a good pick near City Hall Station for a solo dinner and a drink.

Myeongdong hair salon cut for a loose perm + private head spa: Yerideu

Yerideu Hair (예리드) is a hair salon on Myeongdong 8ga-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul, where you can get a cut and a head spa in one visit. After work, the writer came to Yerideu Hair to tidy frizzy hair left by a perm that had loosened, and had a consultation, a head spa in a separate one-person room, then a cut and blow-dry. CMS Soundbar is an LP sound bar playing mostly R&B, on the second floor above Sindang Jeongi Tongdak (신당전기통닭) inside Sindang Jungang Market, near Sindang Station Exit 1 in Seoul. Three friends sat at a sofa table, started with 2 highballs and a bottle of Kirin Ichiban, then added 2 Glenallachie on the rocks; the Kirin Ichiban was satisfying, but the highballs tasted too weak on alcohol. Sindang Station makgeolli pub: 1-hour rainy weeknight wait, Gyeryugwan

Gyeryugwan is a chicken restaurant near Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, serving oak-fired neungi mushroom chicken and makgeolli. On a rainy weeknight the writer arrived around 6:30 pm, waited about 1 hour, then ate oak-fired neungi chicken, chicken neck tangsuyuk (sweet and sour fried chicken) and chicken doenjang makguksu (buckwheat noodles with soybean paste) with Neurinmaeul makgeolli; the well-fermented young radish kimchi and the whole roast chicken, delicious down to the skin, stood out. Gyeryugwan is a Sindang pub well worth the wait.

Namsan-view Italian in Myeongdong: bisque linguine at Mano di Chef

Mano di Chef Myeongdong Branch is a 2027 Blue Ribbon Italian restaurant on the 11th floor of the UNESCO Building in Myeongdong, Seoul, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on Namsan. The writer ordered the seaweed pesto & seafood barley risotto and the whole-shrimp bisque linguine; both the chewy barley risotto and the rich bisque pasta loaded with red shrimp were satisfying, and choco pop ice cream came out after the meal. Mano di Chef is on the pricey side, but its food, view and service make it a Myeongdong Western restaurant worth a return visit.

Euljiro gastropub on autumn weeknights, wings and fries: Another Level

Another Level (어나더레벨) is a gastropub on the 4th floor on Euljiro 12-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul, known for its rooftop drinking terrace. On a cool autumn weeknight the rooftop terrace was closed, so the writer spent 2 hours at Another Level's indoor seats over spicy ttukbaegi pasta (22,000 won), chicken wings (20,000 won), Terra draft beer and soju. The verdict: Another Level serves good-quality food for the price, and the writer keeps returning for team dinners.

Namdaemun kids' shop: size M hoodie for a 40-month-old, Apple Smile

Apple Smile is a kids' clothing shop at stall 12 inside Burdeng Kids' Clothing (부르뎅아동복) in Namdaemun Market, Jung-gu, Seoul. For a 40-month-old child (about 100cm, 16kg), the writer bought a charcoal gray zip-up hoodie in size medium for 36,000 won as an everyday jacket for daycare.
