The cooler weather made staying home feel like a waste, haha. Craving a bit of a bread pilgrimage, I went looking for bakeries in Ikseon-dong and ended up at Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) near Jongno 3-ga.

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what are its hours and parking?
Munhwa Bakery's address is 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and it's open daily from 11:00 to 20:00.

Right in the heart of Ikseon-dong, surrounded by modern signage everywhere, this bakery stood out instantly with its hanok (traditional Korean house) exterior. It really suited the Korean-feel atmosphere of Jongno 3-ga. Accessibility was good too — just a 4-5 minute walk from Jongno 3-ga Station on the subway. There's no dedicated parking lot, so I'd recommend parking briefly on the street out front and picking up your order.

Arriving 10 minutes before opening: how long is the wait at Munhwa Bakery?
There was no wait when I went. That's because I did an opening run, haha. Last time I went during weekday peak hours and waited about 15 minutes to get in, but this time I arrived 10 minutes before opening and walked straight in. Worth noting it'll probably get busy during weekday lunch or weekend daytime.

The interior is on the smaller side, so only two groups are let in at a time. I went in along with a foreign visitor right behind me.

Inside, Munhwa Bakery was cozy, with bread organized by type so it was easy to pick. The quiet, snug atmosphere was really charming.

These aren't brought in from a factory or outside supplier — everything is baked fresh in-house, handmade.

What breads are on the shelves at Munhwa Bakery, and what do they cost?
First up, the onion bagel! Not the palm-sized bagel we're used to seeing — this one was huge, spread out like a fan, with plenty of onion cream in the middle.

There's also sweet potato bread and white bean paste bread, which felt like root vegetables turned into bread, plus walnut bread piled high with walnuts.

And here's the thing — I always thought baguettes were the longest bread I knew, but this coffee bread was even longer. Ask staff and they'll cut it into easy-to-eat pieces for you.

Prices ranged from the ₩3,000s to the ₩6,000s, pretty good value given how prices have been these days. (I really wish bread prices would stop climbing...)

Is the signature garlic bread really crisp outside and soft inside?
And then, Munhwa Bakery's signature menu item — garlic bread! It's in baguette form, and while some versions of this bread are all-crispy, this one had a crispy-outside, soft-inside texture that satisfies both the crispy camp and the soft camp.

Between the layers of garlic bread, the garlic sauce was so generous it was practically overflowing. Absolutely a visual knockout 🥹

When you order, they pack everything individually in a box or bag, so it made for a clean takeout experience!

Everything went into a paper bag and I headed back toward Jongno 3-ga Station~

How do the rice cheese bread (5,900 won) and maple cream cheese bread (4,900 won) taste?
What I ordered: rice cheese bread ₩5,900 and maple cream cheese ₩4,900.

The rice cheese bread comes as a whole loaf, with golden cheese browned on top and cheddar and roll cheese studded throughout the inside, adding a savory, salty depth. Since it's made with rice, the texture was even chewier and fluffier, making it a great snack to share between kids and adults.

Second up, the maple cream cheese! Crumble coats the outside, and the inside is packed with cream cheese, so it was tangy and sweet at once. It went really well with an Americano or milk.
