Supsok Oki Jip Uijeongbu Station Main Branch is a beef BBQ restaurant on Sinheung-ro 258beon-gil in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, known for a forest-like interior decorated with plants and neon lights. The writer ordered 3 servings of Emperor Rib Finger (hwangje neukgansal), served with cream soup on a silver tray and a beef radish soup cooked with a raw egg stirred in, and was pleased with the homemade marinade and the juicy meat. Supsok Oki Jip Uijeongbu Station Main Branch is a good fit when you want beef in an atmospheric setting.

Namyangju Korean BBQ with campfire marshmallows: 2002 Witch's Arpeggio

2002 Witch's Arpeggio (2002 마녀의 아르페지오) is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving pork belly in tomato sauce, set in the mountains of Myojeoksa Valley in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi. At the end of a fall foliage drive, the writer ate cheese tomato pork belly and a crispy-outside, chewy-inside potato pancake on the yellow-parasol outdoor terrace, then roasted the dessert marshmallows over a round outdoor fire pit. 2002 Witch's Arpeggio suits a day when you want an autumn mountain meal outdoors and a camping-style finish in one trip.

Yangju pork kimchi stew & grilled Spam, self-serve rice: Choi Budae

Choi Budae Jjigae (최부대찌개) is a Korean stew restaurant on Okjeong-ro 10-gil in Yangju, Gyeonggi, known for kimchi stew, budae jjigae (army stew) and stir-fried army stew. The writer ordered kimchi stew for 2 and grilled Spam at Choi Budae Jjigae and enjoyed the pork-packed kimchi stew so much they went back to the self-serve Suratgan corner for more rice. Despite the army stew name, Choi Budae Jjigae's kimchi stew is just as worth ordering.

Sunday tonkatsu in Yangju Okjeong: fiery udon & loin katsu, Himawari

Himawari (Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch) is a tonkatsu restaurant in Okjeong New Town, Yangju, with up to 3 hours of free parking in its building's car park on floors 3 to 7. After a 20-minute wait at Sunday lunch, we had Himawari's spicy seafood udon set with loin katsu and the sweet potato cheese katsu set, plus free chicken katsu from a review event. Himawari's spicy seafood udon is hot enough to make you sweat, but with crisp loin katsu it made a great weekend meal.

Korean BBQ in Uijeongbu: grill pork belly before beef rolls, Cheonpo

Cheonpo Hoegwan Uijeongbu Main Branch (천포회관 의정부본점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Beomgol-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, known for pork belly grilled with minari (Korean water dropwort). On a return visit, the regular writer ordered 1 serving of pork belly and 2 servings of beef rolls and, as staff advised, grilled the raw pork belly first and the seasoned beef rolls afterwards. Verdict: with unlimited minari and kimchi, a DIY kimchi pancake, and complimentary yukhoe and snail ssamjang, Cheonpo Hoegwan's sides are as generous as its meat.

Uijeongbu forest-path café, black sesame & Earl Grey Basque: Forerest

Forerest is a large house-style café hidden at the end of a forest path at 181 Nogyang-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. After following the arrow signs down the forest path, the writer chose a sunlit room in Forerest's cabin-like interior, which has many separate rooms, and ordered an iced mocha, an Earl Grey milk tea, and black sesame and Earl Grey Basque cheesecakes. Forerest's Basque cheesecakes look small, but they are so dense that a single slice fills you up.

Marinated beef rib BBQ for two near Uijeongbu Station at Sotongae

Sotongae Uijeongbu Direct Store is a Korean BBQ restaurant specializing in marinated beef rib meat (sogalbisal), on Hoguk-ro 1298beon-gil near Uijeongbu Station in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Two diners ordered 500g of marinated beef rib meat (for 2) and the self-made flying fish roe rice balls; doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) came free, and a warming space around the grill's edge kept the meat and rice balls warm to the end. With its sweet marinade, tender meat and great pairings with myeongi-namul and green onion kimchi, Sotongae is a very satisfying marinated beef rib spot near Uijeongbu Station.

Sokcho sashimi shop packed at 3pm Sunday, flounder fin platter: Hoega

Hoega (회가) is a sashimi and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant on Beonyeong-ro 43beon-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, also known for takeout and delivery. Around 3pm on a Sunday, the writer phoned in an order for a small mixed sashimi platter (43,000 won) and a mulhoe (17,000 won), picked them up at Hoega and ate at their accommodation. The writer was pleased by the generous flounder fin meat, the thick-cut sashimi and the well-balanced mulhoe broth. Verdict: Hoega is a sure bet for good-value sashimi takeout in Sokcho.

Bakery café in Yangju that donates bread daily: basil tomato at Doasis

Doasis is a large bakery café on the 2nd and 3rd floors of a building on Hwahap-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi. On a weekday around lunchtime, the writer had freshly baked basil tomato bread, cream cheese brioche, lemon cake, walnut black sesame bread, Chocococo and carrot cake with an Americano, then took the leftovers home. With free parking, a spacious plant-filled interior and daily bread donations to elderly people living alone, Doasis is a great place in Yangju to sit back and relax.

With a shrimp-packed ebi katsudon, juicy loin katsu and friendly staff, Himawari is a satisfying tonkatsu spot in Yangju Okjeong.

Sokcho plant-filled café: Neorae Latte & choco croissant, Cafe Neorae

Cafe Neorae is a large bakery café on Wonamhaksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, with views of Ulsanbawi Rock. At Cafe Neorae we explored the plant-filled 2nd floor, the staircase lit by sunlight through its glass ceiling and the 3rd floor, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame Ulsanbawi Rock, then tried the Neorae Latte and Sseoda Einspänner (7,500 won each) and a choco croissant (5,000 won). Cafe Neorae is a relaxing pick for Sokcho and Goseong travelers who want views, coffee and fresh bakes in one stop.
