This is a story about a cake piled high with sweet mango and peach: Sijeunikeu (시즈니크) at Shinsegae Department Store Centum City.

Maybe it's because the weather has been so hot lately, but I keep craving something sweet and cold. And seasonal fruit is the cheat code for summer desserts, right? I heard there was a cake loaded with July's perfectly ripe mangoes, so I dashed over to Sijeunikeu, a spot near Senteomsiti Station in Busan that I'd had my eye on for a while! 🥭

Where is Sijeunikeu Centum City, and how does it work?

Sijeunikeu shop in Shinsegae Department Store Centum City

Sijeunikeu is a mango whipped-cream cake shop inside Shinsegae Department Store Centum City. I saw the look of the cake on Instagram and thought, I have to go. Then I happened to have a department store trip coming up, so I quickly reserved the "Mango Top Cake Mini" and picked it up.

The shop is in the basement food court inside the department store, across from Starbucks. It connects straight to Senteomsiti Station, so even on a sweltering day like this you don't have to step outside. That's a big plus.

One note: there are no tables here, it's a pickup-only takeout shop! It's perfect for dropping by while shopping at the department store or on your way home from work. 😉

What cakes are in the Sijeunikeu showcase?

The showcase was full of gorgeous cakes made with seasonal fruit at its peak. A faint sweet fruity smell drifted out as I got close to the shop, and I was already excited before going in. 😍 My eyes were darting everywhere. Fruit lovers will go crazy for this.

Sijeunikeu has a unique concept: "Shinsegae of Fruit, Sijeunikeu Farm." They say they get fresh fruit every morning, handle every step of production from A to Z themselves, and make and sell everything the same day. 🌿

Besides mango, the summer lineup included a pinkish peach cake, and wow... the look of that one was no joke either! It looked fresh, like it combined the best of crunchy, crisp peaches and soft, sweet ones,

so I came to pick up mango and ended up lingering in front of the peach cake for ages. I made up my mind to come back to Shinsegae Centum next weekend just to try that peach cake. 🍑

Is the Mango Top Cake Mini worth ₩39,000?

The Mango Top Cake Mini is ₩39,000. There were a lot of temptations, but I brought home my original target, the seasonal mango top cake mini! Considering what handmade cakes at independent cafés and department store desserts cost these days, I thought it was quite reasonable.

That's because the sign flat-out said "uses 3 whole mangoes"! They also use domestic fresh cream and fresh mangoes sourced every morning, so my trust shot up before I'd even tasted it. ✨ I'd underestimated it as a "mini," but in person the fresh seasonal mangoes are stacked tightly and high, and it feels hefty.

True to the slogan "what happens when you spill fruit," the Mango Farm Warreuru Cake (망고농장 와르르케이크) has mango tumbling over the top, and the look is a work of art. Gold leaf and rosemary sit on the yellow mango, giving it a luxe feel. I've been to a lot of Busan cake spots, but for looks alone I think this might be number one.

The staff were friendly too, so pickup was a happy experience, and I carried it home very carefully so the shape wouldn't get ruined. Even before I opened the box, the rich, sweet smell of fresh seasonal mango was wafting out and I could hardly stand it. 😋

The look is such a cheat code that I think this one cake alone would make you the star of a birthday or anniversary home party. It's also great if you're looking for a gift dessert at Shinsegae Centum.

How does the Sijeunikeu Mango Top taste at home?

The Mango Top Cake had fresh mango packed in without gaps, not just on the outside but top, bottom and inside. As soon as I got home I quickly brewed an americano and got ready to taste, and this is definitely not one of those stingy cakes with a thin layer of mango stuck on the surface. 🙅‍♀️

First, the weight: it's hefty. When I peeled off the film, the juicy, fresh springiness that only fresh seasonal fruit has, which you never get from frozen fruit, was all there. You can really feel that three whole mangoes went in, a generous amount.

I scooped up a big forkful and wow... it truly melts in your mouth. The mango was ripened just right, so it chews softly without a single tough fiber, and it's very sweet, not an artificial sweetness but a rich, juicy sweetness that bursts. There's a reason people go on and on about department store cakes.

Add the nutty domestic fresh cream and the combination was the best. The cream isn't slippery or heavy, it's clean and mild, and doesn't mask the mango flavor at all. The sponge is very moist and soft too, so it slides down smoothly with the cream and mango. 🍰 It's a magic cake where the sponge and cream vanish the moment they hit your mouth.

Conclusion: if you want a proper fruit cake in Centum City

If you're looking for a properly made, real fruit cake, definitely take home the Sijeunikeu Mango Top Cake from the basement food court of Shinsegae Department Store Centum City. It was a very satisfying purchase with my own money, and ₩39,000 was not a waste at all! Have a sweet day, everyone 💛
