Where is Heukmaneul Boribap and where do you park?
Heukmaneul Boribap is located at 7-1 Byeolgok9-gil, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Danyang Gugyeong Market (단양구경시장) is one of those stops you can't skip when visiting Danyang. Browsing the market and snacking your way through it is fun, but midway through a trip I often start craving a proper meal with warm rice and side dishes. This time I went looking for lunch near Danyang Gugyeong Market and ended up at Heukmaneul Boribap, a Korean restaurant that uses black garlic in a distinctive way.

Being close to Gugyeong Market made it easy to walk over after browsing the market, so it's a good spot for anyone looking for restaurants near Danyang Market too. There's parking for about 2 cars in front of the restaurant, and if that's full, the Gugyeong Market public parking lot is about 180m away. Parking can be a low-key hassle when traveling in Danyang, so having a backup lot nearby was convenient.

Inside Heukmaneul Boribap: the room for 5 to 12 people
The restaurant has a cozy, homey Korean-restaurant vibe. It was easy to eat together with a group, and with a room that seats 5 to 12 people, it looked like a good fit for a family trip or a meal with parents.
Heukmaneul Boribap is run as the second branch of Danyang restaurant Heukmaneul Ssambap. They say they develop the black garlic sauce and the ingredients used in the restaurant themselves, aiming for a clean, light meal. Danyang is famous for garlic, so when looking for something to eat at Danyang Market, I wanted to try at least one garlic-based dish — and a menu pairing black garlic with suyuk (boiled pork) and barley rice made me even more curious.

What comes with the black garlic suyuk barley rice set
The signature menus are the black garlic jeyuk (stir-fried pork) barley rice set and the black garlic suyuk barley rice set. We ordered the black garlic suyuk barley rice set. Along with the main suyuk, you get a good variety of side dishes and barley rice, so the meal felt pretty substantial. While waiting, the side dishes came out one by one.

We got a range of vegetable side dishes — seasoned bean sprouts, seasoned seaweed, mushroom banchan, spicy radish salad, and seasoned carrots. Overall the seasoning wasn't too strong, which paired well with the main suyuk. The bean sprouts still had a crisp bite, and the radish salad was cool and clean, resetting the palate between bites. The seaweed had a nice chewy texture that went well with the barley rice too.

Kimchi, garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and braised quail eggs also came out with the meal. Seeing garlic on the table really drove home that I was in Danyang. With so many side dishes, it didn't feel like eating just one main flavor on repeat — I could rotate through several different tastes, which I liked.

Love seeing hygienic sealed utensils like this~~~~

How does the black garlic suyuk taste? The sauce isn't sharp
Then the black garlic suyuk we'd been waiting for arrived. Thick-cut suyuk slices came with a generous amount of their own black garlic sauce on the side. I expected the black garlic to have a strong smell or taste, but it turned out softer and more subtly blended than I imagined. The suyuk had a good balance of lean meat and fat, so it wasn't dry at all. Taking a bite, the meat was tender with juicy moisture, and there was almost no gamey smell. The lean part was light and clean while the fatty part was savory, so I got to enjoy two different textures at once.

Adding a bit of black garlic sauce on top completely changed the flavor. The subtle sweetness and umami unique to black garlic went really well with the savory richness of the suyuk. Rather than the sharp, pungent bite typical of raw garlic, it had a mellow, aged-like flavor at its core, so even people who find strong garlic dishes overwhelming could probably eat this comfortably. The suyuk alone tastes clean and light, but with the black garlic sauce it becomes sweet and savory, and I kept reaching for more. It felt different from typical suyuk served with ssamjang or raw garlic, so I wanted to recommend it as a Danyang restaurant pick.

Mixing the barley rice with seasoned greens
Of course the barley rice deserves mention too. Mixing in a variety of seasoned greens with the barley rice, along with some gochujang (red chili paste) or seasoning, made for a filling bowl on its own. The chewy, springy texture unique to barley gave it a different appeal from white rice, and mixing in a bit of radish salad, bean sprouts, and mushrooms to taste brought a whole range of textures into every bite.

A spoonful of barley rice followed by a piece of suyuk was a really nice combination.

The barley rice was nutty and light, the suyuk was savory and moist, and the black garlic sauce added a subtle sweetness and umami that tied it all together nicely. With so many vegetable-forward side dishes, the meal didn't feel too heavy even while eating the main suyuk.

The earthenware pot doenjang jjigae
The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) that came with the meal was also memorable. It arrived bubbling in a stone pot with zucchini and vegetables inside, and the nutty aroma alone was appetizing. Taking a spoonful, the doenjang flavor was rich but not overly salty, and it went well with the barley rice. Mixing a little of the stew broth into the barley rice was tasty, and taking a spoonful of the warm broth between bites of suyuk had a comforting, settling effect.
This overall composition is why I thought it made a solid lunch near Danyang Gugyeong Market. Grabbing light snacks inside the market is fun, but there are moments on a trip when you just crave a warm, filling Korean meal.

Who should eat at Heukmaneul Boribap?
Personally, the combination of suyuk and black garlic sauce stuck with me the most. The suyuk itself was tender and savory enough to enjoy plain, but the black garlic sauce added a subtly sweet, deep flavor that made it feel special. Topping it with radish salad or garlic added a crunchy texture for yet another dimension. There wasn't just one or two side dishes — the variety made the meal feel well-rounded and satisfying.
If you're looking for lunch near Danyang Gugyeong Market, a place to bring your parents, or a hearty Korean meal near Danyang Market, Heukmaneul Boribap is worth a visit. Being close to Gugyeong Market makes it convenient to stop by before or after browsing the market, and when parking is tight, the Gugyeong Market public parking lot is a handy backup for your route. Next time I'd like to try the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set or the stir-fried squid set. Getting to enjoy Danyang's distinctive black garlic, tender suyuk, and nutty barley rice all in one meal made for a filling and satisfying lunch.
