Yeongdeungpo Korean BBQ: diced pork neck & cuttlefish mulhoe at Gamgol
In short
Gamgol Yeontan-jip Seonyudo Station Branch (감골연탄집 선유도역점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Seonyudo Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, where the meat is grilled over coal briquettes. On a busy after-work evening, the writer grilled diced pork neck and pork belly, then added briquette fried rice, icy cuttlefish mulhoe (cold raw seafood soup) and dried filefish, and found nothing lacking from the side dishes through the iced yellow peach and slush desserts. If you want a spoonful of cold mulhoe to cut the richness of grilled pork in summer, Gamgol Yeontan-jip is a good choice.

I found Gamgol Yeontan-jip while looking for a good pork belly place near Seonyudo Station. It was right after work hours, so the place was packed and buzzing. I had high hopes for meat grilled over briquettes, and it exceeded them. It wasn't just the meat, either: the side dishes and extras all held up.

Gamgol Yeontan-jip's side dishes: why the green onion kimchi stands out
The basic spread at Gamgol Yeontan-jip Seonyudo Station Branch comes with generous helpings of green onion kimchi, kimchi and seasoned green onion salad (pajeori). I liked it from the start. Every one of them tasted good. The green onion kimchi in particular was nicely fermented with a deep savory flavor, and it went really well with the meat. I kept reaching for the side dishes alone, so the first impression was great.

Diced pork neck goes on the briquette grill first
We put the diced pork neck (kkakttuk moksal) on the grill first. Oiling the grill plate beforehand meant nothing stuck and the meat browned nicely. It was crisp outside and juicy inside, with a really excellent texture. The juices kept coming as I chewed, so anyone who loves pork neck will be happy.

Does briquette-grilled pork belly taste different?
The pork belly here is a decent thickness, crisp on the outside with the juices still intact. We couldn't skip pork belly, so we ordered it too. Grilled golden, the first bite had a wonderfully nutty flavor. Pork belly cooked over briquettes does feel clearly different from a regular grill plate.

It wasn't too greasy, so I could keep eating without feeling weighed down. It was delicious with the green onion kimchi, and grilling it together with kimchi was the best combo. Wrapping it in lettuce is great, but just a light dip in salt is plenty tasty. I think pork belly fans will be very satisfied.

The diced pork neck was cut thick, so it was fun to chew. A faint briquette smoke came through and brought out the flavor, and there was no gamey smell at all. Eaten with the seasoned green onion salad, it stayed fresh and not greasy to the very end. Personally, I'd say the pork neck is a must-order.

Finishing with briquette fried rice
If you've had the meat, you absolutely have to order the briquette fried rice. It had a nutty flavor and a real smoky char, making it a perfect closer. The rice was moist yet fluffy, with a great texture. Even when I was full, it kept going down, so I was satisfied right to the end.

Cuttlefish mulhoe: a cold bite between the grilled pork
The cuttlefish mulhoe (cold raw seafood soup) is a great side to order while you're eating meat. It was honestly a stroke of genius. The sweet, tangy, cold broth cleaned up my whole mouth. There was plenty of cuttlefish too, with a really nice chew. Taking a bite between pieces of meat wiped out the greasiness completely.

There was icy slush in it, so it stayed cold to the end, and the portion was satisfying. The cuttlefish wasn't tough but springy and fresh. In summer, I'd say it's worth coming just for this. It's a side dish, but I recommend ordering it.

Dried filefish, iced yellow peaches and slush for dessert
After the meat and the meal, I also ordered a piece of dried filefish (jwipo). It came out nicely grilled, with a nutty flavor and a chewy texture that I loved. Salty, and more savory the longer you chew, so I kept reaching for it. It's a light way to wrap up, and I recommend adding it.

The iced yellow peaches served for dessert were a big hit too. They were kept cold, so my mouth felt fresh and clean. Rich, sweet juice made them just right as a dessert after meat. A dessert that ends the meal on a happy note.

Finally, I finished the meal with the slush they have set out. It was cold and sweet and cleaned up my mouth once more. I was really pleased they cared about even a small extra like this. From start to finish, this Seonyudo Station pork belly spot was high quality.

Would I go back to Gamgol Yeontan-jip?
From the meat to the side dishes, extras and dessert, this Seonyudo Station pork belly place satisfied me. The flavor of meat grilled over briquettes makes me want to return. Next time I plan to try the other menu items one by one. If you're looking for a pork belly place near Seonyudo Station, I recommend Gamgol Yeontan-jip.
