Gangdong tonkatsu for solo beginners: Mixed Katsu B at Katsu Monster
In short
Katsu Monster Gangdong Office Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant on Seongnae-ro near Gangdong Office Station in Gangdong, Seoul. A writer who finds eating alone daunting dropped in at a quiet in-between hour, sat at the bar and ordered the Mixed Katsu B (18,000 won) and naengmomil, or cold buckwheat noodles (11,000 won). Both the fresh mozzarella cheese katsu and the moist tenderloin katsu hit the spot. Katsu Monster Gangdong Office Branch is a back-to-basics tonkatsu spot where you can enjoy a filling meal alone without feeling self-conscious.

I had errands near Jamsil, it was an awkward in-between hour, and I went looking for somewhere to eat alone. That's how I found Katsu Monster🍖 Eating alone still feels a little awkward to me, but it turned out to be a pretty good choice. (I really, truly struggle with solo meals..🥹)

There are so many good restaurants around here that choosing took a while, but I love tonkatsu (pork cutlet), so the moment I spotted Katsu Monster I walked in without a second thought. Long story short, the atmosphere is easy for solo diners, which made me like it even more.😋
One thing I liked first: you can park 2-3 cars in front. Near Jamsil, that's not bad at all.

Is Katsu Monster Gangdong Office Branch easy for eating alone?
The inside is set up bar-style, so lots of customers naturally come alone. Sitting there, almost everyone seemed to be dining solo, which put me at ease🙊🙊
The staff aren't overly friendly, either. They show up right when you need them, which actually felt more comfortable as a solo diner. There were no awkward moments where I felt watched, and I liked that.

Izakaya-style interior and an open kitchen
The overall interior has a Japanese izakaya (pub) feel, with cute little props that are fun to look at, and the space is cozy enough for a quiet meal alone. With that vibe, I think it would suit anyone searching for a tonkatsu place near Gangdong Office Station too!
Another point I personally liked: everything was well organized and clean. Since it's a bar counter, you can see part of the kitchen, and seeing how hygienically it's kept made me feel even more at ease eating there.

What I ordered: Mixed Katsu B (18,000 won) and cold buckwheat noodles (11,000 won)
I ordered the Mixed Katsu B (₩18,000) and cold buckwheat noodles (naengmomil, ₩11,000). The menu is right in front of your seat so it's easy to choose, and I personally loved that they give you barley tea by default. It's the kind of small touch that makes a place feel comfortable.
I love cheese katsu but couldn't give up tenderloin either, so I ordered ☑️Mixed Katsu B along with the cold noodles. Tonkatsu with cold noodles is practically true love in my book, so I ordered them together without hesitating❤️

What does the fresh mozzarella cheese katsu taste like?
The cheese katsu in Mixed Katsu B is said to use fresh mozzarella, and it was definitely much softer and more savory than ordinary cheese. The food came out faster than I expected, and the frying looked great at a glance.
It leaned clean and mild rather than greasy, so I could keep eating without getting sick of it.

Tenderloin katsu, portion size and price
The tenderloin katsu in Mixed Katsu B was better than I expected too. It wasn't dry, just nicely juicy, so the basics felt solid. It's not a flashy style, but it was reliably tasty tonkatsu.
The portion wasn't small either, plenty for a hearty meal, and the overall price is reasonable considering today's prices. Ordering the mixed set let me try a bit of everything, which made it even more satisfying.
If you're looking for a tonkatsu place that's good for eating alone near Jamsil, Katsu Monster Gangdong Office Branch is worth a visit. It doesn't stand out dramatically, but because it sticks to the basics, I think I'll find myself craving it more often 👍

The cold noodles, needless to say, were cool and clean, perfect for refreshing my palate between bites.
Verdict: is Katsu Monster Gangdong Office Branch good for solo tonkatsu?
Katsu Monster Gangdong Office Branch gets all three things right: a relaxed atmosphere for eating alone, an easy-going menu, and food that's better than just average. I'll remember it as a tonkatsu place where you can walk in comfortably and get a hearty meal when eating alone feels awkward.❤️
