Yangjae Station charcoal chicken BBQ: grill the skin last, Yanggyegok

In short

Yanggyegok (양계옥) is a charcoal chicken BBQ restaurant about a 5-minute walk from Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul, with 2 hours of parking support in its underground lot. On a couple's date the blogger ordered charcoal dakgalbi (2 salt, 1 soy sauce) and bibim deulgye guksu (mixed noodles with chicken) for 11,000 won. Grilling the pre-seared whole dakgalbi meat side first and the skin last kept it juicy, and complimentary dak-gomtang (chicken soup) came out while it cooked. Yanggyegok is worth a stop for a chicken date or company dinner near Yangjae Station if you're driving.

Main photo of the charcoal dakgalbi visit to Yanggyegok near Yangjae Station

Today my husband and I went on a date to Yangjae Station. Lately we've been eating pork, beef and lamb without discrimination, but I couldn't remember the last time we had really good chicken, so we went looking for a truly tasty chicken place. It was good enough that I want to recommend it: Yanggyegok (양계옥), a meat restaurant near Yangjae Station! It's a rare spot near Yangjae Station where you can actually park, haha. Okay, let's start my honest Yanggyegok review!

Yanggyegok exterior and atmosphere

The restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Yangjae Station, so it was really easy to get to on foot~ The vintage yet stylish exterior gave off exactly the feeling of having tasty food and a glass of soju together after work, and it put me in a good mood.

There were about 10 tables inside, the ventilation duct system was very good, and I absolutely loved the retro vibe, haha.

Yanggyegok menu and what we ordered

The Yanggyegok menu has a wide range of chicken dishes, including dakgalbi (chicken ribs, grilled marinated chicken), dakdori (spicy chicken stew) and dakhanmari (whole chicken pot). The sides are also packed, with ramen, spicy cold noodles and fried rice, and I wanted to try them all~

We ordered the dakgalbi and deulgye noodles (cold noodles with chicken). Yanggyegok's dakgalbi is grilled whole over charcoal, and one look at it and you can't help but order it~

Side dishes and sauces at the Yanggyegok self-serve bar

What's at the self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar had perilla leaves, kimchi, pickled chili peppers and all sorts of sauces. Once you've ordered, checking out the self-serve bar is the golden rule, right??

There were quite a few signs saying the kimchi is very spicy so take only what you'll eat, which stirred up a bit of a challenge spirit, but we can't handle spice, so we didn't try~

Pre-seared whole dakgalbi from Yanggyegok

How to grill Yanggyegok's charcoal dakgalbi

Yanggyegok's dakgalbi comes as whole, pre-seared chicken, so a short time on the charcoal and it's ready to eat. Our order came out quickly, the seasoning had soaked in well and the meat was in great shape! The advantage of it arriving pre-seared is that you can eat it fast after a quick grill, haha. Let's get it on the grill~

Whole dakgalbi on the charcoal at Yanggyegok

If you put charcoal chicken right in the middle of the fire it can burn fast, so place it slightly to the side. Grilling the skin side often causes flare-ups, so grill the meat side enough first and do the skin side last, and it turns out really delicious~

Free chicken soup while the meat grills

While you grill, Yanggyegok gives you dakgomtang (chicken soup) as a free side, and it was so refreshing and tasty it felt like a health boost~ Great food and great service too! The owner is the best!!

Grill the skin part while cutting the chicken into bite-size pieces. When the inside is just slightly pink and the juices run out, it's grilled perfectly~

Take the first bite with no dipping

Take the first bite of the well-grilled meat without dipping it in anything, and the juices burst out and it's so tender it melts in your mouth!!! Haha.

I really recommend eating the first piece with nothing on it, then moving on to dipping in sauce and making wraps. You get to enjoy different flavors, so you never get tired of it and can keep eating~

Yanggyegok spicy cold chicken noodles: price and taste

Yanggyegok's bibim deulgye noodles (spicy cold noodles with chicken) cost ₩11,000, with chogye (cold shredded chicken) inside and plenty of chicken, so the value was really good. While we were busy eating meat, the noodles we ordered came out too. Tasty, loaded with chicken, and only ₩11,000?!;;

After finishing the noodles, we wrapped up the meal by eating the meat stuck to the bones~ haha. Meat on the bone really is the best, I think~
