With the holiday coming up I had a lot of people to buy gifts for, and I was wondering if there was something a bit more special than a cake. So I went to Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch, a place famous for its gift tteok (rice cakes) in Cheongju! These days I feel like giving something thoughtful that people will actually remember rather than something ordinary. That's when I thought traditional tteok would be perfect, so I worked up the courage to visit. I went to buy oranda as a gift, but once I got there, there were so many kinds that I ended up browsing forever picking things out haha.
Where is Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch, and its hours and parking
Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch is located at 94 Gongang-ro, 1st floor, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. It's on the right corner of the intersection heading toward Ochang, Jincheon, and Cheongju Airport from the Sacheongyo intersection, so it wasn't hard to find. It's open daily from 9 AM to 9 PM, and note that gift tteok, event tteok, dol tteok, and holiday tteok all need to be reserved in advance!
Here's how I parked~ I left my car in the free lot behind the building, between Cheongpungmyeongwol and Tteokmama. Rice cakes and gift sets are surprisingly heavy, so easy parking was truly a lifesaver!
Inside Tteokmama: the shop and what fills the display case
Walking in, the wood-tone interior gave off such a warm feeling right away.
The interior was really spacious so it never felt cramped, and the rice cakes lined up neatly in the display case all looked so appetizing haha.
There were so many kinds of chilled and frozen tteok too. I spotted trendy menu items like cream-filled tteok and Dubai chocolate chapssaltteok (sweet rice cake)! Fruit mochi too! ^^
There were café-style tables too, so it was nice to buy some tteok and a drink and sit for a bit, and there was a separate group seating area further inside.

What I picked this time at Tteokmama Yullyang Branch were five items: oranda, walnut kangjeong, pumpkin mini-seolgi, honey tteok, and gijeong-tteok. There were a lot of songpyeon (half-moon rice cake) reservations too since it was near the holiday. Here's what I chose!

They also had traditional drinks, so pumpkin sikhye (sweet rice punch) and sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch) looked like they'd pair well as an addition to a gift set.

How did the oranda, walnut gangjeong and gijeongtteok taste at home?
Once home I tried each one, and everything I picked was delicious! Tteokmama's oranda wasn't hard or sticky at all — crisp and nutty, absolutely perfect for a gift.
The walnut kangjeong had a great crunchy nut texture, and the pumpkin mini-seolgi had such fine texture it stayed moist rather than dry. The honey tteok was soft and chewy with honey bursting from the center, and the gijeong-tteok was chewy yet light — a taste that would suit older folks' palates well :)
The prices were reasonable too, so I could pick up a bit of everything without much burden!
Is Tteokmama worth it for thank-you tteok and holiday gifts?
If you're looking for a place to buy gift tteok in Cheongju, Tteokmama Yullyang Branch was truly satisfying. Traditional rice cakes with such a polished presentation — plenty good enough as a gift for elders, and more than worthy as a thank-you gift.
🌸 After tasting everything one by one at home, I understood why Tteokmama Yullyang Branch is recommended as a go-to for gift tteok in Cheongju. Traditional rice cakes but with such a sophisticated presentation, they work well as gifts for elders and hold up fine as thank-you gifts too. Everything tasted great, and the prices were reasonable enough to pick up a little of everything haha. If you need holiday or event tteok, it'll probably be much more convenient to reserve ahead. If you're stuck on what special gift to give, I'd recommend stopping by at least once :)
