Daegu yukgaejang restaurant for a summer family meal: Yukbanjang

Yukbanjang Gwangjanggakoa Gwangko Branch is a yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) restaurant on Dangsan-ro in Dalseo, Daegu, near Gwangjang Core (광장코아). Looking for hot food to beat the summer heat, the writer visited Yukbanjang on a weekday evening with her husband and 4-year-old daughter and tried three bowls: tendon yukgaejang, white yukgaejang and sanghwang mushroom yukgaejang. Yukbanjang felt a little pricey, but all three bowls were rich and generous with ingredients, making it an easy recommendation for a family summer stamina meal.

Jisan-dong, Daegu Chinese restaurant: brisket jjamppong, Jungguksung

Jungguksung Ilgeup Yorisa-ui Jip (중국성 일급요리사의 집) is an old-school Chinese restaurant in Jisan-dong, Suseong, Daegu, best known for ganjajang (black bean noodles with sauce stir-fried to order) cooked in lard. On a weekend evening the writer ordered egg fried rice, ganjajang, spicy beef brisket jjamppong (spicy noodle soup) and a medium tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork); the fiery jjamppong broth and chewy house-made ganjajang noodles were the highlights. For a spicy, filling weekend dinner, Jungguksung Ilgeup Yorisa-ui Jip is a great fit.
