Yeouido rice cake shop for in-law meeting gifts: Ojo Manggaetteok

In short

Ojo Manggaetteok is a handmade manggaetteok (rice cake wrapped in smilax leaves) shop on the first floor of the Hongwoo Building in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Looking for a rice cake gift for a sangyeonrye (formal meeting between two families before a wedding), the blogger ordered manggaetteok in bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth); the rice cake was chewy without being tough and the red bean filling was not too sweet, so the whole family enjoyed it. With advance ordering and 1 hour of free parking, Ojo Manggaetteok suits gifts planned for a set date.

I visited Ojo Manggaetteok, a rice cake shop in Yeouido that's great for preparing a sangyeonrye (formal meeting of the two families before marriage) gift. I've always liked tteok (Korean rice cakes) in general, but I'd never really had manggaetteok properly before — after trying it this time, I get why it's so popular!

The taste was great, but they can also do a pretty bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth) wrap, so I thought this would be a solid pick for anyone looking for a rice cake gift that needs a bit more care, like ✔️sangyeonrye gifts or ✔️return gifts.

Ojo Manggaetteok is on the first floor of the Hongwoo Building in Yeouido, so it's an easy Yeouido rice cake shop to stop by if you're looking for a rice cake gift. It's especially convenient because parking is available, which made picking up the rice cakes in person easy! If you get your parking ticket stamped, you get 1 hour free — good to know if you're driving over.

Ojo Manggaetteok also takes advance orders and can do packaging, group orders, and delivery, so it worked well for a gift like a sangyeonrye gift where you need to set a date and prepare ahead of time.

The first thing that caught my eye at Ojo Manggaetteok was, of course, the manggaetteok haha. 100% handmade using domestic red beans, glutinous rice, and mugwort! They said they lower the sugar level and use no preservatives or additives, to let the natural flavor and texture of the ingredients shine.

Beyond manggaetteok, there were really so many types of rice cake. Just from what I saw: lotus leaf yaksik (sweet rice with nuts and dried fruit), mugwort injeolmi, dutteopttteok, apple-rolled rice cake, baekseolgi, honey seolgi, sweet pumpkin seolgi, mugwort-bean seolgi, nutrition chapssaltteok, black rice fig chapssaltteok, mugwort gaetteok, bean powder injeolmi, black sesame injeolmi, and more. If you'd rather mix several kinds than build a gift set around just one type, I'd recommend the mixed sets.

Besides manggaetteok, they also had neatly packaged items like candied walnuts and ginger tea, which looked good for putting together with a return gift or a gift for parents. I liked how tidily everything was packaged 😊

How does bojagi wrapping work for an in-law meeting rice cake gift?

Bojagi gift wrapping offered at Ojo Manggaetteok

One of the reasons I sought out Ojo Manggaetteok was that they can wrap gifts nicely. For a sangyeonrye rice cake gift especially, taste matters, but since it's the first gift you're giving, the presentation matters too. At Ojo Manggaetteok you can add a bojagi wrap along with the rice cakes, so I was able to prepare something that felt much more thoughtful ☺️

I actually prepared the bojagi wrap to hand out to family, and compared to just carrying a plain box of rice cakes, it definitely felt more like a real gift, which I loved. For a sangyeonrye gift set, I'd recommend the bojagi wrap a hundred times over!

How does Ojo Manggaetteok's manggaetteok taste?

I went here while looking for a sangyeonrye rice cake gift in Yeouido — I was drawn in by the pretty packaging at first, but ended up even more satisfied after tasting it, a real Yeouido rice cake shop find! This was actually the first time I'd properly had manggaetteok, and it was way better than I expected *_* The outer rice cake was really chewy, but not tough at all — soft to bite into — and the red bean filling wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be. Instead, you could really taste the nutty flavor of the red beans themselves, and even though I meant to have just one, I kept reaching for more while sitting there.

Compared to the regular chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake) I've had before, the manggae leaf's subtle fragrance gave the manggaetteok a slightly different, more distinctive flavor +_+ And the reaction when I brought it as a gift was great! We shared them among family, the older adults said they were delicious, and the kids ate them happily too, so I think this is a rice cake gift anyone can enjoy without worry, regardless of age.

How to pre-order from Ojo Manggaetteok, and final thoughts

If you have a sangyeonrye coming up, a nicely wrapped traditional rice cake gift like this could work better than something too heavy or overwhelming. Ojo Manggaetteok also takes advance orders — as described, you choose your needed date and time, then decide in advance whether to add rice cakes and the bojagi wrap, and order that way.

📌For bulk orders or other special requests, they say it's best to give them about a week's notice! After trying it myself this time, I found this wasn't just a pretty-looking rice cake gift — the taste itself was really satisfying too, a genuine Yeouido rice cake shop. If you're preparing a rice cake gift for your parents ahead of a sangyeonrye, or looking into return gifts while planning a wedding, I'd totally recommend Yeouido rice cake shop Ojo Manggaetteok! The manggaetteok in particular was so much more delicious than I expected for a first try, so I think I'll be back to buy some as a snack next time too 🤭
