Songnim Bok Jangeo (송림복장어) has opened in Gojan-dong, Ansan!!! I went for my boyfriend, who loves eel.
How much does Songnim Bok Jangeo Ansan City Hall cost?
The eel buffet at the Ansan City Hall branch is ₩29,900 per adult, with a separate ₩3,000 table setting fee. Eel soup was ₩10,000 and cider (clear lemon-lime soda) was ₩2,000.
Besides eel soup, they also have yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) and galbitang (beef rib soup), so kids could eat here too!!! Takeout looks good as well~ Takeout eel is ₩35,000, based on 650g after trimming from 1kg, and comes with 2 sauces. Ginger is ₩1,000 extra and pre-grilling is ₩2,000.

Why Songnim Bok on the way back from Yangyang
We had been to the Songnim Bok in Jeongwang-dong before and were so happy with it that I remembered the name. On the way back from Yangyang I was wondering what to have for dinner,, and decided: Songnim Bok in Gojan-dong, Ansan, let's go!!!
What's at the Gojan-dong self-serve bar?
At this Ansan City Hall branch you bring eel, meat and side dishes from the self-serve bar yourself. If you run out, just go get more, and the Gojan branch even has fried eggs, which was so great, but we went late at night and wanted to focus on the eel and other meat, so we skipped the fried eggs!!
The eel looks insane, right!! And the self-serve bar is kept neat and tidy, so it was really easy for customers to help themselves!!!
They had kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) too!!!! No worries if you can't eat eel~~!! Pork belly and chicken neck are ready as well.
Buffet time limit and restaurant atmosphere
The buffet time limit is 2 hours, and of course you can't take leftovers home.
The place is really big, and since it's right in front of Ansan City Hall, it's great for company dinners too. It's roomy enough for big groups~!!
How to grill freshwater eel well
Grill fresh eel skin side down first. Once cooked well on both sides, remove the middle of the back, the side fins and the head fins. Cut into bite-size pieces, then grill the cut sides until golden brown.
These are the pork belly, chicken neck and eel that come as standard. And you can't skip bokbunja-ju (Korean black raspberry wine) with eel! It's sweet and a perfect match for the eel!
The side dishes you can't skip with eel. I like green onion kimchi more than ginger. And they add charcoal for you~
Grill the eel as the main and put the pork belly and chicken neck on the side. He wanted bokbunja-ju so I told him to go ahead. How can you resist bokbunja with eel!!!
Cut the fins with scissors and the texture and flavor come out even better.
Sprinkle salt on the belly side and flip so it cooks through. I'm driving, so cider for me!!! Cheers!
Are the pork belly and chicken neck worth eating at an eel buffet?
The pork belly and chicken neck at Songnim Bok were sides I kept reaching for between bites of eel. The eel and pork belly are cooking nicely~.~ Since eel is the star, I figured the pork belly and chicken neck would be meh, but nope~!! I went eel, then pork belly, then chicken neck, over and over.
Rice is included in the eel soup price, and going for eel and skipping the eel soup is a crime!!
Plump, tender freshwater eel!
I brought more chicken neck~ It's not dry like chicken breast and is tender and great for grilling, so I went back for more. Haha.
I tried it this way and that way, and since everything goes with eel, I enjoyed it so much. The white kimchi + green onion kimchi + pickled onion combo is great!! The eel is plump and has no bones, so it's a place I want to come back to with my nieces and nephews and my mom!
I like all chicken, but chicken neck!! I'm the type who eats the neck first in fried chicken, so I was a little excited, and it was really good. The meat is self-serve too, so I never felt awkward about going back for more.
My boyfriend fell hard for Songnim Bok, to the point of saying he wants to hold his friends' gathering here.
Finishing with eel soup, and what's on sale
The last step at Songnim Bok is tackling the eel soup!! Mixing in the rice makes it the absolute best. The restaurant also sells eel extract, miso twisted doughnuts and Lala nurungji (scorched rice snack)~
