Café near Gangneung Aquarium: iced drip coffee to go, Coffee Dripper

This is a review of Coffee Dripper, a Gangneung café known for its drip coffee. While traveling in Gangneung, I was looking for a place to grab coffee before heading to the aquarium and stopped by Coffee Dripper. Gangneung has so many famous cafés, but this time I wanted to slow down and actually enjoy the coffee itself, so I went looking for a spot known specifically for drip coffee.

We stopped by briefly during our Gangneung trip before heading to the aquarium, and it wasn't much of a detour, so it was an easy visit. What I liked most was how easy parking was. Sometimes just stopping at one café on a trip turns into a stressful parking hunt, but here I could park on the street nearby and walk right in.

What's the vibe inside?

Walking into Coffee Dripper, the space had a lot of wood tones overall, giving it a warm, cozy feeling. The tables weren't packed too closely together either, so it didn't feel cramped — the whole atmosphere felt relaxed, like a good place to sit down with a coffee and unwind.

The view outside the windows was especially pretty. Gangneung's laid-back atmosphere matched the calm feel inside the café so well that even a short stop felt like a proper break during the trip.

Since we had a baby with us, we decided to take our coffee to go rather than sit for a long time. So we only spent a very short time in the shop, but even in that short look around, I liked the space enough to feel a little sorry about leaving so soon. Next time I visit Gangneung, I'd love to sit down and enjoy the coffee properly.

We ordered the iced drip coffee!

True to the name Coffee Dripper, this place seemed to be known for drip coffee, so we ordered two iced drip coffees. The first sip had way more aroma than I expected — really good.

The scent that rose up while drinking was quite strong. I usually like coffee and drink iced coffee often, but from the very first sip the flavor came through clearly, and I thought, 'this place really knows coffee.' And the part I found most interesting was the ice.

Instead of regular ice, it looked like the ice had actually been made by freezing coffee, which meant it probably wouldn't water down the drink as it melted. When I drink iced coffee, I always find it a bit disappointing how watery it gets as the ice melts, but with this method it seemed like you could enjoy the strong coffee flavor all the way to the last sip. It was so good that I almost regretted rushing through it as a takeaway.

Adding a vanilla croffin & financier!

It felt like a waste to only order coffee, so we picked out some desserts too. We added a vanilla croffin for 5,500 won and a financier for 3,500 won from Coffee Dripper.

The vanilla croffin (croissant + muffin) had a crisp outside with cream packed generously inside. The cream wasn't overly sweet — just sweet enough and soft — and you could see vanilla bean specks dotted throughout.

Eating it alongside the coffee, the sweet cream and the bold coffee worked really well together. The financier was also a good match for coffee, so I was glad we ordered it too. Since the drip coffee had a surprisingly clear aroma and flavor, it paired especially well with the sweet desserts.

My overall take

On this Gangneung trip we only stopped by briefly before the aquarium, so we couldn't stay long at Coffee Dripper — but if anything, that short visit left me wanting more. Parking was easy, the interior was warm and calm, and above all, the drip coffee was genuinely delicious.

If you like coffee, Coffee Dripper seems worth a visit at least once. If you especially like iced coffee, the coffee ice cubes will probably be a fun detail for you too. We took ours to go because of our baby, but next time I really want to sit down and slowly enjoy the drip coffee in the café.
