Tanghua Kungfu Malatang Gangneung Ponam Branch is a self-serve, weight-priced malatang restaurant on Gangneungdae-ro near Gangneung City Library in Ponam-dong. Dining solo, the writer filled a bowl mostly with vegetables and mushrooms, added a skewer, and paid 13,900 won for 630g at spice level 1.5, then used the free 2-hour parking lot behind the building and the free ice cream given one per person. Fresh ingredients and plenty of two-person tables make Tanghua Kungfu Malatang an easy place to eat malatang alone in Gangneung.

Gangneung bakery café at 4pm with lemon and matcha pound: Baegya

Baegya Coffee is a four-floor oceanfront bakery café with a rooftop on Haean-ro in Gangneung, Gangwon. Arriving between 4 and 5pm, when the shelves were nearly cleared, the writer picked a mini butter pound cake in lemon and one in matcha, a condensed milk pie and a passion fruit ade for 18,000 won in total, then ate by a third-floor window facing the sea. Go earlier if you want the popular breads, but the ocean view, rooftop and easy parking at Baegya Coffee were worth the stop.
