Noju in Mangwon, visited for our wedding anniversary

Why I chose Noju in Mangwon for our wedding anniversary course

I picked Noju in Mangwon because it serves an 8-course meal for ₩55,000. Every anniversary we'd gone to the same kind of omakase (chef's-choice) place, and this time I wanted somewhere a little more special. Nothing too expensive though, so I searched hard for a place that was reasonable but still high quality.

Visiting Noju, a course restaurant in Mangwon

That's how I found Noju in Mangwon. Eight courses for a whole ₩55,000 — it already has a solid reputation as good-value fine dining in Seoul. Weekend seats fill up quickly, so I booked ahead on Catchtable. With course meals, I'd really recommend reserving a date and time through the app rather than walking in.

Driving to Noju: where to park

If you bring a car to Noju, park at the Mangwon public parking lot, a short walk away. Mangwon's alleys are narrow, so driving there can feel daunting, but this lot made it easy. It costs just ₩1,800, and it's a nice route too: you can stroll through Mangwon Market to digest after the meal.

Non-alcoholic wine served in a decanter at Noju

Can't drink? Non-alcoholic wine still sets the mood

At Noju I ordered a half bottle of non-alcoholic wine, and it was served in a decanter. We don't drink alcohol that day, so we chose non-alcoholic, and being served so carefully in a decanter really made it feel festive. The wine list prices looked reasonable overall too, so it would be easy to drop by for a glass even on an ordinary day.

Does Noju's atmosphere suit an anniversary?

Inside Noju with large windows and an open kitchen

Inside, Noju is bright with big picture windows, a lovely setting for a date or anniversary where you can chat quietly over dinner. The kitchen is open, so watching the chefs cook is surprisingly fun.

Yuzu ricotta focaccia, the first dish of Noju's course

Fresh, unexpected pairings: the first half of Noju's course

Focaccia with homemade yuzu ricotta

The first dish was focaccia served with yuzu ricotta cheese that they make themselves. Honestly, I couldn't picture yuzu and ricotta together. But once I tasted it, it was fresh and creamy, the perfect appetizer. Experiences like this are the fun of hunting for good-value fine dining in Seoul.

Beet tart, a bite-sized dish in Noju's course

Next came bite-sized beet tart and endive, and the beet tart was totally my taste.

Noju's arancini with sesame oil powder and sauce

Arancini with sesame oil powder

Noju's arancini (fried risotto balls) were crispy outside and moist inside, eaten with sesame oil powder and sesame oil sauce. A Korean nuttiness hits you in a Western dish, which was fun and delicious.

That sesame oil powder in particular is a little devil.

The dish with zucchini, jambon (cured ham) and Emmental cheese was beautifully balanced, with the cheese's distinctive flavor.

A perfect meal and a touching lettering surprise

Noju's anchovy pasta finished with butter and lemon zest

Anchovy pasta finished with butter and lemon zest

The anchovy pasta, finished with butter and lemon zest, was seriously savory. Anchovy pasta can easily turn fishy, but here there was no fishiness at all, just a salty umami that kept my fork moving. The lemon zest was a stroke of genius, lifting the finish.

Noju's truffle-scented signature gnocchi

Next was Noju's signature gnocchi, chewy yet soft potato with a subtle truffle aroma spreading through it. It tasted truly luxurious.

Iberico pork, the main dish of Noju's course

Iberico main

The Iberico pork main was cooked perfectly too. Not a tough bite anywhere, the knife slid right in, and the juices burst out as soon as I ate it. It could rival a beef steak.

Lemon sorbet with anniversary lettering

The course ended with a refreshing lemon sorbet. I'd left a note on Catchtable that it was our wedding anniversary, and they lettered the plate beautifully. A small touch, but it made the end of the day feel really good.

Is Noju in Mangwon worth it for an anniversary?

Considering the quality of the food and service, Noju's price is really kind, and by the end of the meal I was far more satisfied. If you're looking for atmospheric, good-value fine dining in Seoul around Mangwon, put it on your list. The courses pair so well with wine that next time I'll leave the car behind and have real wine with them!
