Ganshao shrimp lunch set at Hongmigwan, a Deokcheon Chinese spot

In short

Hongmigwan is a Chinese restaurant in Deokcheon, Buk-gu, Busan, near Gupo Market. On a weekday afternoon the writer and her mom shared the 26,000 won lunch set: tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), ganshao shrimp, uni-jjajang and jjamppong. The seafood-only jjamppong broth and the house-made noodles at Hongmigwan were good enough that she would gladly come back and pay her own way.

Where to park at Hongmigwan in Deokcheon

Hi everyone, I visited Hongmigwan's Deokcheon branch. Parking here is super convenient — you can pull into the Gupo Public Market parking lot. Just note that on weekday market days you might have to wait a bit during the day to park. Also, one spot is available right in front of the restaurant, so keep that in mind!

How long is the wait on a weekday afternoon?

Seeing how many waiting seats there are, this really seemed like a well-loved spot. I heard the chef used to work at a hotel, so my expectations were high! There's no fancy waitlist system, you just sit and wait. When I went, on a weekday afternoon, there were quietly a couple of parties waiting — maybe two? But the turnover was fast, so I got seated quickly.

You really don't need to worry too much about the wait!

What comes with the 26,000 won lunch set

The inside was packed with people, completely full. That's proof this place is legit. If it's this crowded in Deokcheon, it means the food is really good. I'd visited before too, and the jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) was really delicious. I ordered the lunch set. The lunch set comes with tangsuyuk and ganshao shrimp, plus your choice of two main dishes from jjajang or jjamppong, all for ₩26,000.

The lunch set is really good value, haha.

Also, their uni-jjajang (black bean noodles with minced pork) is famous, and I heard it's included in the lunch set too, so keep that in mind!

Personally, I recommend ordering one jjamppong and one jjajang to share. Because the jjamppong is seriously delicious... it's packed with seafood and the broth is refreshing and tasty...!

Plate of ganshao shrimp served first

Ganshao shrimp and mini tangsuyuk come out first

After waiting, the fried shrimp and tangsuyuk came out first. First up, the ganshao shrimp. Four pieces came out, sprinkled with crispy rice bits. The sauce was like a ketchup-based sauce, and the shrimp meat was so plump and delicious. I inhaled it all before the main dishes even arrived...

And the tangsuyuk came out together too. It was served sauce-on-top style, and since I'm originally a sauce-on-top person, that was fine with me — actually I liked it. The tangsuyuk was packed full of pork so every bite was satisfying, and there were various vegetables that made it fun to eat alongside. Eating it with the jjajangmyeon was a perfect match... It wasn't too sweet, and the sauce was nicely tangy and delicious! Plus it came in a mini size, so it was just the right amount. The lunch set is really good value!

Eating the ganshao shrimp and tangsuyuk together was varied and delicious. I basically finished them before the main dishes even came out...

Uni-jjajang made with house-made noodles

The uni-jjajang was delicious with lots of meat inside. And it had a clean taste. Maybe because the noodles are handmade, they were bouncy, chewy, and really soft. Above all, Hongmigwan's handmade noodles seemed genuinely delicious. The noodles really matter for jjajangmyeon, right...?

Jjamppong with a seafood-only broth mom loved

The jjamppong my mom ordered had a completely refreshing broth that was outstanding. It had mussels, squid, clams, and various other seafood, so it was fun to pick through the different kinds of seafood, and it was loaded with vegetables too, which made it delicious. And the noodles were soft too... My mom really loves jjamppong, but she's not a fan of jjamppong made with pork because she finds it heavy..?

But this jjamppong made with seafood-only broth, she really loved it!

Can you see how soft the noodles are? And with all the different seafood in it, it was fun to eat!

Is Hongmigwan worth it? Final thoughts

Hongmigwan has established itself as a go-to restaurant near Gupo Market in Deokcheon, and I saw people enjoying all kinds of jjamppong and jjajang. There were lots of elderly customers and a big wait, so it was clearly a proven favorite. I liked Hongmigwan Deokcheon so much I'd want to visit again on my own dime. I especially recommend the jjamppong!
