Why I went to Miod Hair Salon with curly, straightening-damaged hair

What brought me to Miod Hair Salon was split ends and curly new roots coming in. One day I glanced in the mirror, and the dry, split ends and the frizzy curls growing in at the roots bothered me so much I couldn't stand it.

I'd had enough, so I went to Miod Hair Salon, a Daegu spot for layered cuts and layered perms, to get rid of the damaged hair and switch to a current style. This is my honest review, and I came out super happy ( ˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈ )ꕤ.˖

I have curly hair, so I get root straightening every quarter, and these were my two worries.

Miod Hair Salon is on the 4th floor of the building right next to Jipsin Maeun Galbijjim (짚신매운갈비찜, a spicy braised short rib restaurant), near Spark Land in Dongseong-ro, Daegu's hot spot.

When I opened the door, I was surprised at how much bigger the inside was than I expected.

I'd booked ahead, and while I waited a bit, the clean yet classy interior stood out. Wait, is this really a hair salon?! It has a stylish, sophisticated boutique vibe and I was overwhelmed.. (⸝⸝ - ̫ - ⸝⸝) It felt like I was being treated like a VIP?!

Consultation: a face-framing layered cut + layered perm

Designer Garin (가린) at Miod Hair Salon recommended a layered cut to soften my facial structure, together with a layered perm that styles itself just by drying. After filling out a short chart, we started a proper styling consultation, and she carefully checked my face shape and even my usual styling habits before suggesting what would suit me.

My face is fairly angular, so she recommended a layered cut that slightly covers the side cheekbones and jawline, softens the lines of my face and adds dimension overall. On top of that, taking into account that I'm bad at styling and too lazy to do it (hopeless with my hands!), she also recommended a layered perm that falls into style naturally while I blow-dry.

Can hair with frequent root straightening still be permed?

Other salons had told me a perm was hard on hair damaged by root straightening, but designer Garin looked at my hair and said it was perfectly doable. She even prepared coffee for me during the consultation, so atmospheric ☕️ Since I've had root straightening every quarter, every salon I visited said a perm would be difficult, but after checking my hair condition, Garin said it was totally possible.

It was my first setting perm in about 10 years, so I was a little worried, but I trusted her professional aura and went for it ~~~

The root straightening and layered perm process at Miod Hair Salon

The treatment went in this order: cut → applying product → root straightening → perm on the lower part → neutralizing.

First, snip off all the damaged hair ✂️

Then product goes on for the root straightening and perm, and you wait.

Partway through I shampooed and saw my original hair,, is this for real??? A chaotic collab of curly and dry. Isn't this basically a natural hippie perm? hahaha

Anyway, my wrecked hair made me a bit anxious, so I asked, can you really perm this? And they said yes!!! They used good products that minimize damage and lots of nourishment, and truly made it possible.

First, the roots are straightened neatly with the straightening treatment,

and the lower part gets the perm. They kept checking whether anything was uncomfortable, whether I was hot or cold, whether I needed the restroom, whether any part of the machine was too hot, and I nearly cried happy tears haha 👸 Total princess treatment 👸

In the meantime I had another sweet iced tea, then on to neutralizing, let's go 💨💨

Garin's hands are so fast that everything finished quickly! Sitting in a salon for ages makes my butt hurt and drains me, but everything moved along quick and precise, so it was really comfortable. So how did it turn out..??? Coming up in a moment.

After the treatment, designer Garin at Miod Hair Salon showed me how to style the layered perm by myself at home, situation by situation. If you practice at home as she showed, getting a look like you've just had a blow-dry at the salon every morning is totally doable.

Layered perm result: full volume, soft hair

The layered perm I got at Miod Hair Salon has a full volume that isn't over the top..!!! And even though it's permed, my hair feels soft.

Much prettier than the old me who just threw my hair up in a messy tie, right?! At work everyone made a huge fuss about how well it suits me.
