Why we stopped at Munhwa Bakery on an Ikseon-dong outing with my child

On a day out in Ikseon-dong with my child, I stopped at Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), a Jongno 3-ga bakery, to pick up bread as a snack. When you go around Seoul with a kid, you don't just head to one famous restaurant. You eat, wander the alleys, and grab a snack somewhere in the middle. Ikseon-dong has restaurants and cafés strung along hanok (traditional Korean house) alleys, so it's a nice place to stroll slowly with a little one.

This time too, while looking around Ikseon-dong, I wanted to take home some bread my child likes, so we dropped into Munhwa Bakery near Jongno 3-ga. In summer we even traveled all the way to Gangwon-do to hunt for good food, but lately I'm enjoying finding places worth visiting with my child right here in Seoul, one by one. 😊

Where is Munhwa Bakery, and what is the shop like?

Munhwa Bakery is about a 3-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station, so it's easy to reach. It's at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, a handy spot to drop into while exploring the Ikseon-dong alleys. Just don't expect a big bakery café.

Choosing bread inside Munhwa Bakery

Munhwa Bakery is less a place to sit and linger than a place to choose bread and take it with you. So we went in with my child, looked over the bread, picked what we wanted, and headed straight to the next stop. With kids, that can actually be the easier way. Choosing doesn't take long, and you can grab a snack and go back to wandering the Ikseon-dong alleys.

What does Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread taste like? 🧄

Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread is ₩6,800, chewy outside and moist inside, which made it easy to share with my child. Of all the options, the garlic bread caught my eye first. It's widely known as the shop's signature item, so I'd wanted to try it at least once on a first visit.

These are the prices I could confirm.

  • Garlic bread ₩6,800
  • Coffee bread ₩5,800
  • Onion bagel ₩6,000

This garlic bread is a little different from the crisp, hard garlic bread you might expect. The outside is pleasantly chewy while the inside is soft and moist. The garlic aroma is subtle, with a sweet, nutty flavor alongside it, so it was nice to share with my child.

When you take a kid to a bakery, they always end up reaching for something other than what Mom thought looked good, right? 😂 This time too, my child was more interested in the sweet, soft bread. I cut the garlic bread up and we ate it together, and it disappeared faster than I expected as a snack.

Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel: a filling grown-up snack 🧅🥯

Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel is ₩6,000 and was more filling than the garlic bread. It was my second pick: if the garlic bread is a sweet snack, the onion bagel is the one for when you want something more substantial. The mild natural sweetness of onion goes well with the soft cream, and it would pair nicely with coffee too.

This one I enjoyed more than my child did. When you keep walking around Ikseon-dong, there's a moment when you've just eaten but get hungry again, and having a piece of bread packed up for that moment is surprisingly reassuring.

Next time: Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread

This time I chose the garlic bread and onion bagel, but next time I visit Munhwa Bakery I'd like to try the ₩5,800 coffee bread. It's one of the signature items with a coffee aroma, so it seems like it would suit a grown-up snack.

Munhwa Bakery has plenty of other breads too, so it seems like it would be fun to pick something a little different each visit. Going with a child, letting them look at the display and choose what they want to eat is a small pleasure in itself.

Our Ikseon-dong outing with a child: how did we move?

This Ikseon-dong outing went in the order of meal → alley walk → takeout bread from Munhwa Bakery. Ikseon-dong has so many restaurants and cafés that with a child you end up wondering where to start. This time we ate while looking around Ikseon-dong, → walked the alleys, → and picked up bread at Munhwa Bakery.

Taking bread from Munhwa Bakery as part of an Ikseon-dong outing

When going out with a child, I find it's much easier to slip in things they like along the way than to plan one long activity. We ate something tasty, wandered pretty alleys, and finished by taking some bread home, which made it a perfect snack for a day out.

Things to know before going to Munhwa Bakery with a child

  • Munhwa Bakery is mostly takeout, so even with a child there was no long wait: we picked our bread and moved on, which was convenient.
  • If you want the popular items, it's probably better to go a bit earlier rather than too late in the day.
  • There's no parking space, so walking from Jongno 3-ga Station is the easiest way to go with a child.

Picking up a bread or two at Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong 🥖

Munhwa Bakery isn't a flashy big bakery; it's a good place to drop into while wandering the Ikseon-dong alleys and take a few tasty breads to go. This time we stopped by while walking around Ikseon-dong with my child, partly to pick up a snack. The garlic bread was great for kids and adults to share, and the onion bagel was a decent, more filling snack. If you feel a meal in Ikseon-dong is too short a finish, strolling slowly through the hanok alleys and packing up a bread at the end is a nice route.
