Late-night coffee date at a Yeonnam-dong café: Central Site Yeonnam

On a busy weekday, after work, my wife and I headed to Yeonnam-dong to unwind from the day over a good cup of coffee. I enjoy coffee normally too, but today I was really craving truly special, high-quality specialty coffee, so I came back to Central Site Yeonnam, one of the Yeonnam-dong cafés especially renowned for its coffee.

When we arrived, the chic black-toned exterior, in perfect contrast with the dark street, and the warm light spilling through the floor-to-ceiling windows immediately caught my eye.

It is wonderful in the daytime too, but at night its uniquely calm, moody atmosphere is doubled, making it a truly perfect place for a cozy late-night date with my wife.

There is something alluring about the cool night air and the brightly visible interior through the wide windows that somehow draws you in. Once inside, the long, sophisticated wood-toned bar table is the first thing to welcome you.

Hario V60 drippers and precise scales for brewing were neatly set out across the bar, giving it the unmistakably professional feel of a coffee laboratory or an intimate upscale bar. At the counter, a range of specialty beans sat neatly displayed in vacuum glass jars, and the lineup was simply spectacular.

The Tamiru 74158 Natural beans, which placed fifth in the 2021 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence, and Colombia Quebraditas Geisha Washed Peach Punch beans particularly stood out.

What clearly sets Central Site apart from the many other cafés around Hongdae is this overwhelming bean lineup and the barista's delicate brewing technique. Rather than simply a drink for a caffeine boost, it offers a cup of brewed coffee that feels like a work of art, bringing out each bean's inherent character to the fullest and letting varied fruit aromas and acidity dance across your palate.

Iced Tamiru Natural and Geisha Peach Punch

After some deliberation, we each ordered Ethiopian Tamiru Natural and Colombia Geisha Peach Punch over ice, then chose house-made tiramisu from the Yeonnam-dong dessert menu to add some sweetness to the coffee.

Sitting side by side at a window seat that felt like a second floor, looking out over Yeonnam-dong's tranquil night street and quiet road, our carefully brewed coffee and dessert soon arrived on a pretty tray.

I first took a sip of the Ethiopian Tamiru Natural in its weighty rocks glass, and the moment it touched my lips, the sweet fruitiness of ripe strawberry and jasmine's delicate floral aroma burst forth so intensely that I got chills.

Just as the tasting note thoughtfully explained, abundant nectarine and apricot juice gently enveloped my tongue, followed by a crisp, clean finish that left an elegant, lingering aftertaste.

The Colombia Geisha Peach Punch my wife ordered also opened with rich, radiant aromas of yellow peach and apricot from the very first sip, with a refreshing quality that called white grapes and watermelon to mind.

With every sip, I was genuinely amazed, wondering where else I could possibly have coffee of such fantastic quality.

The tiramisu served with the coffee was exceptional too. Its deep espresso flavor, soft mascarpone cheese that melted away in the mouth, and the texture of the generous scattering of chocolate chips on top came together perfectly, pleasantly embracing the bright acidity of the specialty coffee. It was the ultimate Yeonnam café dessert.

Late in the evening, quietly watching leaves on the street trees sway and the calm road's night view through the wide windows while sharing a perfect cup of coffee made the fatigue and stress built up through a whole day of work melt away like snow. The calm romance of the dark night meeting excellent coffee was more satisfying than any elaborate date.
