Jonggak pub at 5 p.m.: oxtail stew and hangover ramen at Umi Hoegwan

In short

Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch (우미회관 종각본점) is a Korean gastropub near Exit 4 of Jonggak Station in Jongno, Seoul. With a 5 p.m. reservation, the writer was the first dinner guest and ordered the oxtail stew (₩58,000, limited to 10 bowls a day) and the hanwoo hangover ramen (₩9,000). The ramen had more beef than expected and a spicy broth, and the oxtail stew was hearty. Reserved seats start filling up at the after-work rush, so booking ahead at Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch is a must.

What is Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch like?

Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch (우미회관 종각본점) is a Korean bar-restaurant near Jonggak Station that serves beef dishes like mungtigi (chopped raw beef), yukhoe (beef tartare), yuksashimi (thinly sliced raw beef) and oxtail stew. This time I went with a 5 p.m. reservation for the oxtail stew.

For lunch I'd had pork with a friend. For dinner, I decided to have oxtail stew at Umi Hoegwan near Jonggak Station with the guy next door. We booked for 5, and the place is quiet. We were the very first in for the evening session, and we were shown to a nice cool window seat.

There's a menu board out front, so if you want to size the place up, you can check the menu and prices there at your leisure. By the way, the lunch meals aren't sold at dinner.

Atmosphere at Umi Hoegwan Jonggak

Umi Hoegwan is a calm, quiet place. The wooden interior and the ceramic accessories go well together. It somehow feels like you shouldn't talk too loudly.

Almost every seat was already reserved. If you plan to visit, I recommend booking ahead, because you might get turned away without a seat.

What we ordered: oxtail stew and hanwoo ramen

We ordered the oxtail stew (₩58,000), limited to 10 bowls a day, and the hanwoo ramen (₩9,000). Mungtigi and the oxtail stew went head to head, but the oxtail stew won in the end. Umi Hoegwan sells only 10 bowls of it a day, and one of them was ours. And I added one hanwoo ramen.

Here's the assorted pickle set.

How does the hanwoo ramen taste?

Umi Hoegwan's hanwoo ramen is beef ramen simmered with real hanwoo (Korean beef), and the broth is spicy enough to be perfect as a hangover cure.

The oxtail stew, limited to 10 bowls a day, arrives

The oxtail stew, limited to 10 bowls a day, has arrived. The earthenware plate is super hot, so please don't touch it!

The oxtail pieces come in all different sizes, and one really meaty piece caught my eye. You're mine!

One large piece of oxtail in the stew

The ramen can't be allowed to go soggy, so I'll start with the ramen.

Starting on the hanwoo ramen first

When I pushed aside the chives, there were somyeon (thin wheat noodles) underneath.

I set one big oxtail piece aside first and then cleared the ramen.

Eating the ramen with the oxtail set aside

It's real beef ramen with more meat than I expected. The lunch-special meals aren't sold at dinner, but the beef ramen is so good that it's fine.

I also dunked the somyeon into the leftover ramen broth.

Now to taste the oxtail I'd set aside. It's been a while since I had oxtail, and it's really filling. Umi Hoegwan is famous for mungtigi, but the oxtail stew is good too. I'll try the mungtigi next time I get the chance, and for now I'm happy with the oxtail stew.

Do you need a reservation at Umi Hoegwan Jonggak?

At Umi Hoegwan Jonggak Main Branch, reserved seats start filling up around closing time, so it's safest to book. Lots of people seem to come for a quick drink in the evening. I saw people who showed up without a reservation turned away because there were no seats. Please be sure to reserve before you visit. Reservations are a must, and no-shows are bad manners.

※ Please bear with us if the place gets crowded after this post.
