Yeonnam-dong bakery: individually wrapped summer breads at Mandong
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) is a takeout-only bakery in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, 466m from Hongik University Station Exit 3. On a weekday visit just after 7pm, with every bread individually wrapped for summer, the writer bought a garlic baguette (7,000 won), kabocha ciabatta (6,200 won), sweet potato bread (3,500 won) and ang cream bread (3,500 won), with a staff-offered kabocha ciabatta sample sealing the choice. The final ranking at Mandong Jegwa was garlic baguette, then kabocha ciabatta, ang cream and sweet potato, so the garlic baguette is the one to get.

I was in Yeonnam-dong for the first time in a while, so I stopped by a bakery. I'd been to Mandong Jegwa (만동제과) before, and honestly, when I think "bakery," this is exactly the place that comes to mind!

What was left on the shelves at 7pm on a weekday
Breads baked fresh every day at Mandong Jegwa!
This day I picked four: garlic baguette ₩7,000, kabocha ciabatta ₩6,200, sweet potato bread ₩3,500 and ang cream bread ₩3,500.

I visited a little after 7pm on a weekday. Some breads were already gone since it was close to closing, which was a shame, but luckily there was still a decent amount left.

Let's go bread shopping! I can see tasty ones like Emmental, ssuktteok ssuktteok (mugwort rice cake bread) and squid ink bread.

There are pretzels and chestnut milk loaf too. I couldn't decide what to put on my tray today.

Kaya coconut, a bread you rarely see at other bakeries, is here too.

For the basil tomato and fig campagne, you just tell the cashier how many you want when you pay.

There's corn mayo bread as well. Oh, and because it's summer, every bread was wrapped individually for hygiene.

While I was busy choosing, a kind staff member handed me a sample of the kabocha (Korean pumpkin) ciabatta. It was so good that I decided to buy it right away!

I picked four breads in total and paid.

How did the ang cream and kabocha ciabatta taste at home?
It was hot out, but I got everything home safely.

The ang cream bread is a mix of sweet red bean paste and cream cheese.

It felt much softer than an ordinary red bean bun. The kabocha ciabatta was also really good, better than I expected. The ciabatta's signature chew with the subtle sweetness of kabocha made it plain yet filling. And of course, the garlic baguette was delicious too!
Overall verdict
A comfortable Yeonnam-dong bakery focused on the true taste of bread
If you're looking for a good bakery in Yeonnam-dong, I recommend Mandong Jegwa. I was happy with all four I tried, but my personal ranking is garlic baguette > kabocha ciabatta > ang cream > sweet potato. It's a hot summer, but if you can't give up bread, do drop by!
