Chuncheon is super famous for makguksu (buckwheat noodles)! Since moving here, my partner Mun loves makguksu, so we've been touring makguksu spots~ This time I found a restaurant serving really tasty fusion Korean dishes: Hyeondae Memil (현대메밀).

Every dish was beautifully plated and the taste was top-notch too, so we ate very happily.

It's close to Namchuncheon Station, so it's a great place to come for makguksu~ Let me introduce Hyeondae Memil, a Chuncheon buckwheat specialist.
Where is Hyeondae Memil, and what are its hours and parking?
Hyeondae Memil is at 29-1 Namchun-ro 5beon-gil, Chuncheon, 1st floor, in Toegye-dong. It's open 11:00 to 20:30 (last order 20:00), with a break from 15:00 to 17:00, and it's open year-round.

It's a 5-minute walk from Namchuncheon Station, so it works well as a meal stop there. If you're driving, you can park in the alleys around the restaurant.

Hyeondae Memil menu and atmosphere
You can check the menu at the entrance beforehand! Instead of the usual dongchimi (radish water kimchi) or bibim makguksu, there were soy sauce makguksu and salted octopus makguksu, so the fusion makguksu caught my eye~ There were lots of side dishes too, so it looked like a hearty meal.

The interior has a calm, quiet mood that stood out. It's very clean inside, and there's one floor-seating table, so it's good for visiting with kids too. It's already a popular date spot in Chuncheon, so there were lots of couples. We're a couple too, so we came to Hyeondae Memil for makguksu near Namchuncheon Station.
We sat down and looked at the menu first! You order on the tablet at each table. There were lots of meal options, so each of us picked what we wanted.
I prefer places that serve barley tea instead of plain water, and this barley tea was so good that I finished a cup right away, haha.

The three dishes we ordered at Hyeondae Memil
All the dishes arrived! I liked that everything came out at once. The plating was pretty and the smell was so good that I suddenly started drooling, haha.

Warm buckwheat noodles, ₩10,600

Mun wanted the warm buckwheat noodles, so we ordered them. It came looking really appetizing, with rich broth and generous toppings~ You can also order it without the Vietnamese chili so it isn't spicy, so I think it'd be good for kids too.

Buckwheat mala sujebi, ₩11,600

I really love mala, but Mun doesn't enjoy it, so I usually only eat mala dishes when I eat alone! Hyeondae Memil has a mala dish. The buckwheat mara sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) was loaded with toppings and looked hearty and tempting.
Sous vide whole pork belly, ₩21,600
I'm a big meat lover, so a meal without meat just won't do, haha. We wanted meat together, and the menu had sous vide whole pork belly, which sounded juicy and delicious, so we ordered it.

The sous vide whole pork belly came out looking moist and tender,

and, true to a place known for house-made sauces, it came with a variety of accompaniments.
- Shishito peppers
- White kimchi
- House special garlic pesto
- Salted shrimp
- Wasabi
- Minari (water dropwort) ssamjang
I loved this tempting variety of ways to eat it. Hyeondae Memil really is a plating specialist, perfect for a date course in Chuncheon.

Geotjeori (fresh-tossed kimchi) also came as a basic side! It's hard to find restaurants serving freshly made geotjeori these days, so I was so happy to get it here~ The soy sauce is for dipping the vegetables from the warm noodles!

Is the buckwheat mala sujebi very spicy?
The mara sujebi at Hyeondae Memil had a mala flavor that wasn't overdone, just right. It suited my taste perfectly, since I like mala but can't handle it too strong.
Now that all the dishes were out, time to really start eating~

I tried the mara sujebi broth first, and the mala flavor wasn't overdone, just right. I like mala too but can't eat it too strong, so it matched my taste perfectly~
The rich broth and generous toppings looked so appetizing!! The chewy sujebi went well with the hearty toppings and vegetables. The mala broth with crunchy bean sprouts and chewy sujebi was a winning combo, really delicious~
Meat lovers will love it even more because it has beef brisket in it! It tasted even better eaten together with the brisket.
How the warm buckwheat noodles taste and how to use the soy sauce
The warm buckwheat noodles had a clean, not overly strong broth, so it's easy for anyone to enjoy, with no divided opinions. It was the dish Mun ordered, but I tried it too.

The noodles are soft, so you can slurp them up together with the vegetables. I also dipped the vegetables in the soy sauce, and eating them that way is a treat~

Which side goes best with the sous vide pork belly?
The sous vide pork belly went surprisingly well with the salted shrimp sauce, and eating it with geotjeori was a winning combo too. The tender, soft texture was impressive.
After enjoying the meal dishes, we tried the pork belly~ I dipped it in the dedicated sauces, and I fell for the tender, soft sous vide pork belly. It has lots of sauce combinations, so we tried them all one by one~ As expected, pork belly and salted shrimp sauce went so well together that I was surprised.
I also tried it with crunchy, fresh geotjeori and it was a perfect combo! Eating it this way, I feel like I could finish a whole plate of pork belly by myself, haha. We ate nonstop in full mukbang mode.

Buckwheat rice in the broth, and truffle potato pancake next time
Mun, a big eater, wanted to put rice in the broth, so we ordered buckwheat rice, and rice in the rich broth was heavenly, of course! Noodles and then rice too, I love carbs, haha.

We cleared every last piece of meat.

Everything we ordered was delicious and we had a proper mukbang~ Looking at other tables, a lot of people ordered the truffle potato pancake as a side! It looked crispy and tasty, haha. Next time we'll add the truffle potato pancake too.

Is Hyeondae Memil a good date restaurant in Chuncheon?
Hyeondae Memil, a fusion Korean restaurant in Toegye-dong, has a nice mood and top-notch taste and plating, so I recommend it as a Chuncheon fusion Korean date course and also as a place for a hearty meal. Everything we ordered was delicious, so I'm curious about the other dishes and think we'll visit often! Please come try the makguksu near Namchuncheon Station. Next time, I'll order the makguksu too~
