Gangneung tofu restaurant, 15-team lunch line skipped: Jeong Eunsuk

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu (정은숙초당순두부) is a sundubu (soft tofu) Korean restaurant at 200 Nanseolheon-ro, Gangneung, at the entrance to Chodang Sundubu Village. After a walk on Gangmun Beach, the writer arrived at peak lunchtime to find 15 teams waiting, but a Naver reservation meant immediate seating for the Chodang Premium Table for two. Boiled pork topped with gajami sikhae (fermented flounder) and a spicy cabbage sundubu hot pot made Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu a meal worth coming back for.

Gangneung abalone restaurant with seasoned crab: Haenyeo Village

Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village (강릉전복해녀마을) is an abalone porridge and seafood set-meal restaurant on Haean-ro near Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, across from St. John's Hotel. After catching a last-minute holiday train to Gangneung, the writer ordered the pressure-cooker abalone porridge set for two as a first meal of the day and finished everything: a basket of seafood, self-serve banchan such as seasoned crab and green onion kimchi, and a pot of porridge packed with abalone. Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village closes at 3:30pm, so dinner is not an option, but it is a Gangneung breakfast spot well worth a return visit.

After shopping at Hyundai Department Store, the writer ordered one serving of traditional handmade garlic gopchang (28,900 won) and one of mixed gopchang (27,900 won), grilled by staff with a fire show, then finished with a fried rice pan and Omokgyo dongchimi noodles (chilled radish-water kimchi noodles). Balsan Station pork galbi late dinner, 8:30pm last order: Ihwajeong

Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga Magok-Balsan Branch is a pork galbi (marinated grilled pork) restaurant in Gangseo, Seoul, a 4-minute walk from Exit 4 of Balsan Station. Because the kitchen closes at 8:30pm, the writer arrived at 7:50pm and ordered 2 servings of marinated pork neck galbi plus 1 more, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) with rice, and pear sherbet for dessert, while staff sprinkled pear juice on the meat and grilled it at the table. The seasoning at Ihwajeong Galbi Myeongga is mild enough for parents and kids, but the last order comes early, so late-evening diners should time their orders carefully.

Yeouido gyukatsu restaurant before IFC Mall shopping: Izawa

Izawa Yeouido Direct Store is a gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Yeouido Jonghap Sangga, a one-minute walk from Exit 5 of Yeouido Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a Friday after work, before shopping at IFC Mall, the writer split a gyukatsu set and a steki (unbreaded grilled beef) set with a companion, grilling the rare-served meat to taste on a personal mini brazier and eating it with wasabi, the house sauce and salt. The brazier runs hot so the beef cooks fast, and autographs from singer Lim Young-woong and YouTuber Hiibap hang beside the register.
