Jocheon café, Jeju: no per-person order rule, mango bingsu, Lala Cafe

Lala Cafe is an apple mango bingsu and bakery dessert café on Namjo-ro in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City. With two kids, the writer shared Lala Cafe's signature apple mango bingsu for two, made with apple mango from a theme farm in Seogwipo, plus a salt bread and an ube latte, and the mango was soft enough to win over a writer who never cared for mango. With no one-item-per-person rule, Lala Cafe is an especially easy Jeju dessert café for families with children.

Seocho Station pie shop: long-trip treats for kids at Saison de Pie

Saison de Pie (쎄종드파이) is a handmade pie and baked-goods shop on a side street in Seocho-dong, near Seocho Station in Seoul. A couple in Seoul on errands took home pecan pie, Engadiner pie and two flavors of diamant (French butter cookies) for their two daughters. Saison de Pie packed the order carefully so it held up on the long trip, and both girls enjoyed everything. Verdict: Saison de Pie's cream-free pies and baked sweets are a safe pick for a kids' snack or a gift that has to travel far.

Poke for two near Seolleung Station: wasabi & truffle mayo, Hola Poke

Hola Poke Seolleung Branch is a poke and salad restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building in the food alley by Exit 2 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. After a morning of errands in Seoul, a married couple had lunch there: a garlic shrimp poke on soba with wasabi sauce, and a seafood poke on half brown rice, half soba with truffle mayo sauce. Hola Poke Seolleung Branch made a light but filling lunch, and the two different sauce pairings were good for sharing.

Seolleung Korean BBQ date with a handwritten name card: Hwaseol

Hwaseol Seolleung Direct Branch (화설 선릉직영점) is a beef and pork Korean BBQ restaurant in the food alley off Exit 1 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, with a wood-toned interior, a camping-style zone and private rooms. A married couple booked one day ahead and arrived in the early evening. They found a handwritten card with their name on it, and staff grilled a 400g 1% black beef platter for them. They ate it with salt and basil pesto, then finished with mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles). Hwaseol Seolleung Direct Branch suits a date or a company dinner where you want to talk instead of minding the grill.

Yeosu dessert shop, no wait on a weekday at 2 PM with kids: Jwasuyeong

Jwasuyeong Baguette Burger (좌수영바게트버거) is a dessert shop in the food alley of Yi Sun-sin Square in Yeosu, selling baguette burgers, fat macarons (ttungkaron) and mugwort ice cream. On a weekday visit at 2 PM there was no wait for the 3 items ordered, and the kids wolfed down the baguette burger with spicy Cheongyang chili so fast that 2 more were packed to take home. Verdict: park in the Yi Sun-sin Square underground public lot, or at Jinnamgwan public lot a 3-minute walk away if the queue is long.

Gwaireui Sup Yeosu Branch (과일의숲 여수점) is a fresh-fruit bingsu (Korean shaved ice) and dessert café on Baekchoan-gil in Dolsan-eup, Yeosu. Visiting as a group of four with kids and a niece, the writer ordered melon bingsu and a strawberry towel cake, and the group finished the melon bingsu, piled high like a mountain with round melon balls, shine muscat grapes and blueberries, down to the very bottom. With a photo booth inside the indoor seating area for travel souvenir photos, Gwaireui Sup Yeosu Branch is a great kid-friendly café stop in Yeosu.
