Galbi BBQ for three in Jongno, Daegu: garlic ribs & rice bowl, Jangjak

In short

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a three-floor galbi restaurant on Jongno street in Jung-gu, Daegu. Three of us shared 500g of Uiseong garlic fresh galbi (₩58,000), added a 250g half plate of marinated galbi, and rounded it out with spicy black pork ramyeon, a ₩3,000 rice bowl (daejeopbap) and mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles). Jongno, Daegu galbi restaurant Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch: a place for tasty Uiseong garlic beef ribs

Today I visited a galbi restaurant in Jongno, Daegu: Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch (벽돌 생갈비 종로점). Besides fresh galbi (unmarinated short ribs) and marinated galbi, they serve garlic fresh galbi loaded with Uiseong garlic. It sits on the Jongno strip, so it works for company dinners and group get-togethers too.

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch: hours and atmosphere

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is open daily from 17:00 to 1:00 a.m., with last order at 00:00. It is a three-floor building on the Jongno strip, and the entrance has "벽돌 생갈비" written in bold, impactful letters.

The banner is huge too, so it's easy to find. The inside felt upscale. There was even a chandelier, which made the mood feel a notch more luxurious.

Uiseong garlic fresh galbi: price and portion size

The Uiseong garlic fresh galbi at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch can only be ordered in 500g portions, at ₩58,000. The regular fresh galbi can be ordered as a full plate or a half plate.

We came because we heard the garlic galbi was good, and at ₩58,000 I liked that the price was gentle for beef ribs.

Homemade side dishes

They told us Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch makes all of its basic side dishes in-house. When you taste them, you can really feel the care.

Side dishes including jaeraegi and icy radish salad

From jaeraegi (a seasoned salad) to icy radish salad and pickles! There were plenty of side dishes that go well with the meat, so the meal never got boring, which I loved.

How are the garlic galbi and garlic sauce?

The garlic galbi at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch comes topped with a heap of garlic sauce. They marinate it the moment you order, so you get fresh galbi.

And then there's the garlic sauce served alongside. Dipping garlic-piled galbi into a sauce packed with even more garlic... we really are Koreans, the garlic people, haha.

The staff grilled all the meat for us. Being grilled for by meat experts was so nice~ And everyone was friendly, which made it even better!!

Complimentary cypress steamer while we waited

While we waited for the meat to be grilled, a cypress steamer came out as a freebie. Meat, bean sprouts, shrimp, and mushrooms! Even as a free dish, it was a really generous spread.

Dipped in the soy sauce, it is sooo good haha. A little meat to cleanse your palate before the meat 👍

Two doneness levels to taste, then adjusted to your liking

The staff at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch gave us two versions to taste, a regular one and a slightly more grilled one, and asked which suited us better. The color gets more golden bit by bit! The care of adjusting the grilling to your taste was the best.

This is that garlic sauce again. It's sweetish, and dipping the meat in it was so good!! Garlic really is the best~~

We added spicy black pork ramyeon too

At Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch we also ordered spicy black pork ramyeon with the meat. I like having rice or noodles with meat rather than meat alone. The broth is sharp and spicy with meat in it, and of course, add some carbs and the meat tastes even better.

How much for 3 people? Adding a half plate of marinated galbi

One plate (500g) of Uiseong garlic fresh galbi felt a bit short for three people, so we added a half plate (250g) of marinated galbi. True to the "brick" name (벽돌, byeokdol), the ribs are shaped like a brick!

This was grilled deliciously by an expert too ❤️ They even grill the meat stuck to the bone and strip it off for you. All we have to do is eat comfortably!

The ₩3,000 rice bowl: do you need to order it?

The rice bowl (daepjeobbap) at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is ₩3,000 and comes with vegetables, seaweed, a fried egg and a special sauce. We needed some carbs again, so we ordered it.

Just add the sauce and mix it up. I totally recommend the rice bowl: it goes well with the meat, and it's simply delicious on its own. Next time I want to order doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) too!

Mul naengmyeon from a BBQ restaurant, eaten as dessert

Cold noodles for dessert

These are the mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in broth) my friends had~~ I tried a little, and I felt again that naengmyeon at a BBQ restaurant is perfect as a closer. It had a cool taste that wipes the grease right away.

Would I return to Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch?

Three of us went home full, having eaten tasty beef at this Jongno, Daegu restaurant, Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch. It would be good with family, and I think it would make a good date too. The staff are friendly and the food is tasty, so I'll probably come back!!
