Daegu dog café without a dog: Basque cheesecake & latte, Daenghaus

Daenghaus&Bingsuking is a dog-friendly café in a standalone three-story building on Jungang-daero 81-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. The writer visited Daenghaus&Bingsuking with his wife and no dog, ordered an iced condensed milk café latte, yuja apple tea and Basque cheesecake, then looked around the first-floor hall, the second-floor mat zone playground, the outdoor lawn garden and the dog pool. Verdict: even without a dog, Daenghaus&Bingsuking is worth it for rich, dense desserts and plenty of puppy-watching.

Daegu ramen shop: torch-seared chashu and Kara level 2 at Ryusenso

Ryusenso Dongseong-ro is a Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen shop on Gongpyeong-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. The writer had the original Ryusenso topped with torch-seared chashu (11,000 won), Ryusenso Kara at spice level 2 (11,000 won) and Jeju black pork gyoza (8,000 won), then finished by adding rice to the leftover broth. With its rich pork-bone broth, smoky chashu and pleasantly fiery Kara level 2, Ryusenso Dongseong-ro is a ramen shop worth recommending for a solo meal or a date in Dongseong-ro.

Daegu sushi: no-egg fish assortment and 14-piece special, Sushi Naru

Sushi Naru Yeongdae Hospital Main Branch is a sushi restaurant near Yeongdae Hospital in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, that slices its fish to order. We ordered the assorted fish sushi and the 14-piece special sushi (₩25,000) with uni, otoro, scallop and freshwater eel, tasting each piece, and the assorted sushi came with mini udon and a salad as standard. Jongno, Daegu BBQ with pork galbi and acorn jelly soup: Jangjak

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a charcoal galbi restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu, where staff grill the meat from start to finish. A couple ordered two portions of bakpo fresh pork galbi (150g, 11,000 won each) and a half plate of Jangjak marinated galbi (250g, 29,000 won), wrapped it with pajeori (scallion salad) and paired it with cold muksabal (acorn jelly soup), and the wife said the bakpo pork galbi tasted better than Buam Galbi in Incheon. If you want well-grilled galbi, intercostal meat included, without ever touching the tongs, Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a good fit.

Daegu tuna restaurant with beef-like cheek meat: Hangil Tuna

Hangil Tuna Janggidong Food Alley Branch is a tuna restaurant in the Janggi-dong food alley in Dalseo, Daegu, where the Manager Special at 58,000 won per person comes with up to 2 tuna refills. A couple who ordered the Manager Special for two on a weekday evening remembered most the rich tuna cheek meat that tasted like beef yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and the tuna sushi the owner shaped by hand at refill time. Even as a refill tuna restaurant, Hangil Tuna keeps serving cheek and belly cuts, making it great value for money.

Smoke-free eel buffet at Ansan's Diamond Plaza: Songnim Bok Jangeo

Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch is an all-you-can-eat charcoal grill restaurant for freshwater eel, chicken neck and pork belly at Diamond Plaza in Wolpi-dong, Ansan. Adults pay ₩29,900 (plus a ₩3,000 table fee) for 2 hours; the writer had two refills of plump freshwater eel and meat, then finished with bokbunja (black raspberry wine) and eel soup, and found the eel clean-tasting with no fishy smell and almost no smoke. Songnim Bok Jangeo offers good eel quality for the price, making it a solid pick for a family meal or team dinner in Wolpi-dong.

Hangover Chinese food near Pohang City Hall: jjamppong rice, Hwamok

Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan (화목반점 객잔) is a Chinese restaurant on Daei-ro in Nam-gu, Pohang, near Pohang City Hall. After a night of heavy drinking, the writer ordered gan-jjajang (black bean noodles), brisket jjamppong rice (spicy seafood soup with rice) and kimchi pizza tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). The jjamppong rice soothed the hangover, and the tangsuyuk tasted 10 times better than the Cookat version the writer had kept stocked at home. For hangover Chinese food and cheese-loaded kimchi pizza tangsuyuk in one meal, Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan is worth recommending.

Pohang mulhoe restaurant under a lantern ceiling: Oneuldo Gajami

Oneuldo Gajami (오늘도가자미) is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) restaurant specializing in wild-caught flounder, on Haean-ro near Yeongildae in Pohang. Under its colorful lantern ceiling, a couple ordered flounder mulhoe (20,000 won), three-seafood flounder mulhoe (25,000 won) and fried flounder and squid (15,000 won), and their first taste of fried flounder beat the fried squid. Oneuldo Gajami suits anyone who wants good mulhoe with an open-air pub atmosphere.

Pohang pub near Yeongildae: truffle gnocchi and Asahi draft at Rokdam

Rokdam Localdaum (롴돰 로컬다움) is a record pub with LPs, whiskey and a drum stage on the 2nd floor of a building on Samho-ro in Yeongildae (Duho-dong), Pohang. The writer and his wife drank Asahi draft beer and a Long Island iced tea alongside gambas al ajillo (15,000 won), bisque pasta (18,000 won) and cheese-stuffed truffle sauce gnocchi. Rokdam Localdaum is a great pick for a Yeongildae date when you want both atmosphere and handmade bar food.

Pohang Songdo pasta restaurant: shrimp rosé, ramen-spicy pilaf, Plan A

Plan A Restaurant (플랜에이레스토랑) is an ocean-view Western restaurant on the 4th floor of a building right in front of Songdo Beach in Pohang. A spicy beef chop steak (120g), shrimp rosé spaghetti and a beef pilaf as spicy as regular ramen came to ₩55,000 for the three dishes, and the sea view through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the rosé pasta packed with small shrimp were the highlights. Plan A Restaurant is a good pick for pasta, pilaf and steak in one meal with a sea view, followed by a walk on Songdo Beach.

Jukdo Market crab with gejang soy dip: Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang

Gallilli Daegae Hoe Sikdang is a seafood restaurant in Jukdo Market, Pohang, Gyeongbuk. We ordered the two-person Bakdal snow crab set, with mulhoe, assorted sashimi, abalone sashimi, clam soup, spicy fish stew, and crab-shell innards fried rice. Verdict: the crab meat dipped in soy sauce from the marinated crab was the real winning bite.
