Beef galbi BBQ in Jongno, Daegu with cypress-steamed sides: Jangjak
In short
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a galbi (beef short rib) restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu, that occupies several floors of its building. On a weekend evening with a child, the family ordered one plate (500g) of marinated Jangjak galbi. Staff grilled it from start to finish, and generous side dishes such as a cypress-steamed dish (pyeonbaek-jjim) and icy radish salad came with it. The beef was so tender that a child who usually spits out chewy meat ate even the meat off the bone, which made Jangjak Saenggalbi a satisfying family dinner.

Every weekend evening, I start worrying about what to feed my kid again. I can already picture myself chasing the child while flipping meat, so barbecue places always make me hesitate. This time, though, I'd heard Jangjak Saenggalbi is a famous beef spot in Jongno, Daegu, so I took the plunge.
To get straight to the point: we had a relaxed family meal and really enjoyed the meat for the first time in a while.

What kind of place is Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch?
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch (장작생갈비 종로본점) is a galbi restaurant that uses a whole building in the middle of Jongno in downtown Daegu. From what I could see, they use floors 1 through 4.
The building stands out from the street so it was easy to find, and the space is so roomy that I felt no stuffiness even before going in.

Seating by floor
The 1st floor felt elegant with a slightly warm touch. The soft lighting makes it cozy overall, and it looked like a nice spot for a quiet meal or a date for two.
The 2nd floor has big open windows, so it feels really airy, and the tables are spaced generously.
The entire 3rd floor is set up as private rooms. It looked perfect for family gatherings or company dinners where you want to talk quietly among yourselves. I've saved it as a candidate for our next get-together.

What should you order when eating with a child?
With my kid's taste in mind, I ordered one plate (500g) of the sweet marinated galbi. Looking at the menu, I went back and forth between the fresh (unmarinated) galbi and the marinated one.
I wanted to experience proper Jongno, Daegu beef, so I deliberated for a long while, but in the end I chose the marinated one for my child's taste and finished ordering.

Self-serve bar, sauces and side dishes
The self-serve bar at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is kept really clean. There wasn't a single smear of sauce, and it was stocked with fresh vegetables, so I felt at ease the whole time I was getting food.
The table sauces were pretty varied too. They start with Himalayan pink salt, which keeps the flavor of the meat clean, and the special sauce was delicious, the kind that grows on you the more you dip.

The standard soy-pickled perilla leaves (kkaennip-jang) and chive-chili soy sauce paired really well with the meat. Wrapping meat in the salty perilla leaf cut right through the richness, and the soy sauce with zesty chili was the kind of thing you keep reaching for.

At last, the marinated Jangjak galbi I'd been waiting for appeared. The marinade had soaked in nicely, and since the color wasn't overly dark, it looked even more appetizing.

Soon after, powerful real charcoal came in and the grill started heating up. The faint smoky aroma from the charcoal drifted past my nose, and that's when my stomach started making noises. Grumble~

Cypress steamer as a standard side
With crunchy lettuce scallion salad and cool, spicy icy radish salad (frozen radish strips) added, the table filled up generously. What surprised me most was that a cypress steamer (pyeonbaek-jjim) with a faint woody aroma came as a standard side.
I could pick at the brisket and vegetables, light and plain, while waiting for the meat to cook, which was really satisfying.
Does Jangjak Saenggalbi grill the meat for you?
Yes, at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch, the staff grill everything for you from start to finish. Marinated meat is tricky to grill because it burns if you look away for a moment, but I didn't have to worry about that.
Their hands were so careful that the meat came out with not a single burnt spot, perfectly ready to eat, so all I had to do was use my chopsticks in comfort.

How does the marinated galbi taste, and what to pair it with
I first dipped a well-cooked piece of marinated beef galbi lightly in salt, and the juices spread softly in my mouth. Then I tried it with the special sauce, and also paired it with the icy radish salad, with its crunchy bits of ice, and the fragrant perilla leaf pickle.
The meat itself is so tender that every combination worked.
Mul naengmyeon to cleanse the palate, and yuk-ssam naengmyeon
After eating a fair amount of meat, I ordered a cold mul naengmyeon (noodles in icy broth) to refresh my mouth. One sip of the broth with its floating slush cleared my palate and cooled me down to the core.
Of course, you can't skip topping the naengmyeon with a piece of marinated galbi to make yuk-ssam naengmyeon (meat-wrapped cold noodles). The chewy noodles with the sweet, savory galbi on top made the bowl disappear in no time.

Did the child eat well?
The proudest moment at Jangjak Saenggalbi was watching my kid take the meat. Normally, if it's even a little tough, my child can't swallow it and spits it out, but here the meat is so tender that they chewed it all up with rice, down to the meat on the bone.
Seeing my child's reaction, I was really glad I'd sought out this beef place in Jongno, Daegu.

Verdict and visit information
Beyond the main galbi, Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch has a wide range of things for meals or drinking snacks, like ttagwijjim (a braised dish), crab and shrimp soup (gesaebitang) and doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew). The staff kindly grilled all the meat, the restaurant was pleasant, and my child ate well, so it was an ideal spot for our family's weekend dinner out.
For fresh galbi, it's absolutely Jangjak Saenggalbi! I'm 200% going back.
