Galbi with Mom in Jongno, Daegu: garlic ribs & cold noodles, Jangjak
In short
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a galbi restaurant at the entrance to Jongno in Jung-gu, Daegu, where staff grill the meat for you. The writer went for a long-overdue dinner with their mom and ordered 500g of Uiseong garlic saenggalbi (fresh, unmarinated ribs) and bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), and the tender ribs, many side dishes and friendly staff pleased even a picky mom. Where is Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch and how do you get there?
Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is on Jongno in Jung-gu, Daegu, the street that's become famous lately for having so many good places to eat. It's right by the entrance, so it was easy to reach by bus or subway!

Sadly, it's downtown, so there's no dedicated parking for Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch, but there are paid lots nearby you can use!
Atmosphere and seating
The interior and atmosphere were grand, from the outside to the inside! I thought only the 1st floor was open, but there are seats on the 2nd floor too, so it was bigger and roomier than I expected!

What did we order at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch?
Mom and I ordered the Uiseong garlic saenggalbi, bibim naengmyeon and one soft drink. You can get the saenggalbi and the marinated galbi half and half, so I debated between that and the Uiseong garlic saenggalbi, but Mom picked the Uiseong garlic saenggalbi, so let's go!

We added bibim naengmyeon and a soft drink to go with it!!
There were also lots of other dishes beyond what we ordered, like bulttagwi-jjim and gesaebi-tang, so it'd be great to come as a group and order a bit of everything!

What side dishes come with the meal?
At Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch, a whole table of side dishes is laid out after you order. Here's the spread that came out after we ordered!!

Wow, there were so many kinds, including side dishes you don't see elsewhere, so picking at them one by one was a real joy. Even Mom, who has a picky palate, said everything went well with the meat and ate it all!

Then the fire was lit, and the small plates plus the dipping sauce and salt for the meat were all set!

What is the Uiseong garlic saenggalbi?
The Uiseong garlic saenggalbi came as 500g, and when you order it they bring a garlic sauce made with Uiseong garlic separately. They keep sprinkling the garlic sauce over the meat as it grills, and we were told we could dip in it too :)
And here it finally is, the Uiseong garlic saenggalbi!! It was 500g and the portion was wow. Plus the sauce is made with Uiseong garlic, so it has to taste even better!!!!

Do the staff grill the meat at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch?
Yes, at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch the staff take care of all the grilling~~ Time to grill!! Heavily marinated meat like this is really hard to cook over charcoal, so I loved that the staff did it all for us!!

It had been a while since I'd had dinner with Mom, and I wasn't busy flipping meat at all. Chatting while eating the perfectly grilled, tender meat made me truly happy :)
Meat texture that parents can enjoy too
The meat quality was so good, really tender and not tough at all, so I think older people can eat it easily too! There were lots of sauces and side dishes to eat with the meat, which was great!

Even on its own it's delicious thanks to the savory depth and aroma of the garlic sauce,

but with the various side dishes it was even more delicious!!!

How was the combination of saenggalbi and bibim naengmyeon?
The bibim naengmyeon at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch has a tangy, spicy sauce and chewy noodles, which went well with the sweet saenggalbi. Right when we were deep into the meat, the perfect partner arrived: bibim naengmyeon 👍

Tangy, spicy sauce and chewy noodles, the kind of dish you slurp down endlessly! Eaten with the sweet, savory meat, the combo was amazing, and I was glad we ordered it.
Staff who stayed friendly to the end
While we demolished everything from the meat to the naengmyeon, the staff member kept grilling hard for us. They even grilled the last bits of meat on the bones, and they were so kind too! Mom said they reminded her of my younger brother, and she kept talking about them on the way home 👍
Free cypress steamer
And the finishing touch!!! Every table at Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch gets a cypress steamer (pyeonbaek-jjim) as a free service. We were stuffed from the meat and naengmyeon, but it was so good that we finished it all.
