Geoje pork soup: mixed gukbap with vs without dadaegi, Bongga Gukbap
In short
Bongga Gukbap is a pork gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant on Giseong-ro in Geoje-myeon, Geoje, Gyeongnam. For the last meal of a Geoje trip with kids, the family ordered suyuk baekban (boiled pork set meal) for 12,000 won, two bowls of seokkeo gukbap (mixed gukbap) for 9,000 won each, one with dadaegi (spicy seasoning paste) and one without, plus sundae gukbap (Korean blood sausage soup) for 9,000 won, all generously filled in a clear, peppery broth. Bongga Gukbap leaves the dadaegi out of kids' bowls and opens at 7:30am, so it works for breakfast too.

For our last meal on our Geoje trip, we filled up on gukbap at Bongga Gukbap before heading home. I'd been swimming hard again like the evening before, so I was starving.
The kids ate well, and so did I. The bowls were generously packed — I loved that! And the restaurant was clean, and the taste was clean too. The owner's own paintings and calligraphy on the walls made the interior feel unlike a typical gukbap restaurant, which stuck with me.

Parking and hours at Bongga Gukbap

Bongga Gukbap has room for about 5 cars right in front of the store. This isn't Seoul or Gyeonggi, so parking isn't really a worry.
There's no break time, but the restaurant is closed on Sundays. If you're looking for breakfast in Geoje, it opens at 7:30am, so it works for that too.

There are these cute little figurines at the counter — since it's a pork gukbap place, the pig figures were extra adorable.

Water and extra side dishes are self-serve. There are paintings on the walls, and it turns out the owner painted them — I asked, because I was curious.

Seating and the self-serve bar
The restrooms are inside the store, separated by gender but sharing one entrance.
There's seating straight ahead from the entrance and off to the left — the photo below is the left side. There are 4-person tables, but plenty of people eat solo here too. I visited right as lunch hour was wrapping up, so it was quiet. (I'd had breakfast, then swam for 3 hours.)
The self-serve bar is kept tidy. Side dishes, plates, ladles, scissors, and kids' utensils (forks) are all here.

This might be the first time I've seen health benefits listed at a gukbap place — I've usually seen that at samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) or duck restaurants. There was a sign explaining the benefits of gukbap, perilla powder, cheongyang chili, and chives. I didn't read it too closely, but my family's philosophy is that a hot bowl of gukbap is basically a health tonic.

Menu and prices at Bongga Gukbap

Here's the menu at this Geoje favorite. Pork gukbap, offal gukbap, sundae gukbap, and mixed gukbap are all 9,000 won. Bongga beef gukbap is 10,000 won, and suyuk baekban is 12,000 won. There's also a suyuk tasting portion for 15,000 won, with small and large suyuk sizes available.
Today's order: suyuk baekban, mixed gukbap (with dadaegi), mixed gukbap (without dadaegi), and sundae gukbap (without dadaegi).

Here are the basic side dishes. The suyuk baekban order came with lettuce wraps included — chive and onion pickle!? Plus chives, chili-garlic-onion mix, lettuce wraps, and diced radish kimchi, and geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi).

What comes with the ₩12,000 suyuk baekban?
The 12,000 won suyuk baekban comes with boiled pork, a bowl of rice, and gukbap broth (with a little of the ingredients). Plus lettuce wraps.

The suyuk was tender and well-boiled. I barely noticed any pork smell, and I ate it with onion and salted shrimp.

Suyuk baekban comes with both broth and rice, so you get soup and meat together in one dish. If you want a hearty meal and lots of protein, suyuk baekban seems like the way to go.

Mixed gukbap for ₩9,000: with and without dadaegi
We ordered the 9,000 won mixed gukbap two ways — with and without dadaegi. We asked for the kids' bowls without dadaegi, and it seemed like more perilla powder went in instead — it tasted nuttier.

I ordered mine with dadaegi but didn't mix it in right away. I tasted the broth without dadaegi first (ate about half), then enjoyed the rest with the dadaegi stirred in.

The mixed gukbap had plenty of ingredients, which I loved. There was a generous amount of sundae too, so I gave it to my son. I ate the ingredients and rice a bit separately, tasted the kimchi, then eventually mixed rice into the broth.

Without dadaegi, I mixed the rice into the broth, scooped up a big spoonful, and piled kimchi on top. The geotjeori is salty on its own, so you don't need to pile on too much.

I ate about half without dadaegi, then added it in. With the broth, ingredients, and rice already halfway gone, adding dadaegi at that point felt less sharp than it would have been from the start. Either way, dadaegi boosts the savory flavor. So gukbap really does give you two different flavor experiences depending on whether you add it — plenty of ways to enjoy it.

It's delicious with dadaegi too. As a gukbap lover, my usual order of operations is: taste the ingredients + rice + kimchi first without mixing, then mix the rice in, and finally add dadaegi and mix again. It was delicious. When you move your body a lot, everything tastes amazing. People really are meant to move.
How does sundae gukbap differ from mixed gukbap?
My daughter wanted sundae too, so she ordered the 9,000 won sundae gukbap. She's old enough now to handle gukbap pretty well.

Sundae gukbap isn't hugely different from mixed gukbap — mainly just the ingredients differ. The broth is clear and pepper-based, and the ingredients are generously portioned! Chives come mixed in by default.
In summary
Bongga Gukbap in Geoje works for breakfast, for solo dining, and for a hearty gukbap meal. Kids' bowls come with the dadaegi left out, and you can simply ask them to skip it if you'd rather not have it.
This trip to Geoje ended with a satisfying gukbap breakfast and meal all around! I'll be back to Geoje again.
