Pre-baseball donkatsu in Gwangju: sweet potato mousse katsu, Filling
In short
Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch is a donkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) and Western-style restaurant on Seoljuk-ro in Buk-gu, Gwangju. Before an away baseball game at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, the writer brought the kids to Filling Donkatsu for soup, cream pasta and sweet potato mousse donkatsu. The meat was thick and tender, the pasta rich and creamy, and even the kids cleaned their plates. Filling Donkatsu is a donkatsu spot worth recommending for a family meal before a Gwangju ballgame.

Donkatsu before a Gwangju baseball game: Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch
Before heading to Gwangju-Kia Champions Field for an away baseball game, we had a meal at Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch (필링돈까스 용봉본점) in Buk-gu, Gwangju. Since we were in Gwangju anyway, I searched and searched for a good place, and this donkatsu spot is what I found.

The moment I saw it, I thought, "Ah, these people are seriously into donkatsu!" Filling is practically synonymous with Gwangju donkatsu!

They keep a donkatsu map at the counter, a play on the old Korean map "Daedong Yeojido" that they call the "Daedonyeojido" (a donkatsu atlas). You can tell right away how passionate they are about donkatsu. Hahaha!

Is there parking at Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch?
Yes, Filling Donkatsu Yongbong Branch has its own parking lot, so we parked right away and off we went! Parking is covered for 1 hour 30 minutes, I was told.
A parking lot is so nice~ These days a lot of restaurants get skipped because there's nowhere to park, so seeing a roomy lot is a real relief. Hahaha!

Their philosophy is to give everything to the ingredients and not skimp on cost... I guess you could call it that? It was a framed sign that clearly showed some real determination~

It proudly made the list of Korea's top 100 donkatsu spots, the undisputed pride of Gwangju! Gwangju's donkatsu! Filling Donkatsu! My kids decided to call it "Healing Donkatsu" because it was so delicious it healed them, lol.

Inside Filling Donkatsu: the dining room
The inside of the Yongbong Branch has a retro interior. It gave off a strong feeling that took me back to my school days~

Salad, pickled radish and soup served with every order
At Filling you first get salad and pickled radish, followed by soup! Our firstborn refilled the soup and had it twice, lol. Of course, soup is where a gyeongyangsik (Japanese-influenced Western-style diner) meal begins! Haha!

The soup is thick and delicious! Good, good!

Filling Donkatsu cream pasta, finished by one kid alone
The dishes are starting to arrive! First up is the cream pasta that our second kid loves~ Isn't the bowl really elegant too?

The moment it arrived, the feast began! Haha! This cream spaghetti shows you what thick and rich really means! It's our second kid's absolute favorite, totally in love~ Pwahaha!

There goes our second kid, inhaling it! Normally this one can't finish a whole portion alone, but it must have been so good that the plate was totally cleared!

Filling Donkatsu signature dishes: donkatsu and sweet potato donkatsu
Now the signature dishes of this Gwangju donkatsu favorite arrive. Ta-da! A donkatsu famous for its crunch, and a sweet potato donkatsu with sweet potato mousse on top! The sweet potato one costs a little more, but I think it's well worth it!

How tender is the donkatsu at Filling Donkatsu?
The meat was so tender that it cut crisply with just a knife, and I wondered if they use really good-quality pork! You know Yeondon, the famous donkatsu place? They say theirs can be cut with a spoon, no knife needed. It was just about that tender~ Just the right softness! Good!!
Donkatsu really is love! A true healing menu for guys! A choice that never fails!

See that thick, juicy inside? It feels like it's declaring this is what real donkatsu is! Haha! Definitely top-notch taste.
Actually, Filling has a spicy donkatsu too, but with the kids along, I didn't get to see the spicy side this time. Next time I'll definitely take on the challenge!!!

Is Filling Donkatsu a good Gwangju donkatsu spot for families with kids?
We eat out with the kids a lot, and if the kids eat well, that's the best result, right? Haha! Doesn't that prove it's the real deal? Filling really is the Gwangju donkatsu place! But is it only the donkatsu that's good? Nope~ the other dishes are all high quality too!

The thick meat is fantastic. Add the sweet potato mousse on top and it's the best~ Hahaha! We found Filling by searching while in Gwangju for Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, and it delivered absolutely top-notch flavor!

Filling makes every dish with real care. If you're heading to Gwangju, or going there for a baseball game, I really want to recommend it. Thanks for kicking off our Gwangju trip, and I hope Filling hits it big~ though it's already a hit, lol.
