Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap (심학산 들꽃쌈밥) is a ssambap (leaf-wrap rice) restaurant focused on set meals, located on Dolgoji-gil in Paju, Gyeonggi. The writer visited with a partner at 6pm on a weekday and had the Deul set for two (40,000 won), enjoying the pumpkin porridge, perilla-dressing salad, thick doenjang (gangdoenjang), the leafy-greens self-bar, the squid and spicy pork stir-fry combo and ice cream for dessert. Verdict: Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is a Paju restaurant where everyone from adults to kids can eat comfortably.

Paju Korean BBQ open to 6 a.m.: gochujang pork and rice, Haetteuljip

Haetteuljip is a Korean BBQ restaurant and late-night diner on the 2nd floor of the Jungsim Sangga shopping arcade near Yadang Station in Paju, open from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day. The writer drove there, so skipped beer, and ordered 2 servings of gochujang pork belly (18,000 won each), cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew, 5,000 won) and rice (1,000 won). The portion filled a big grill plate, and the sweet, non-spicy marinade made Haetteuljip a satisfying Yadang Station BBQ spot even with rice instead of alcohol.

Yadang, Paju seafood restaurant: steamed female crab at Camping Garden

Camping Garden Gogirang Jogaerang Paju Yadang is a grilled clam, seafood and meat restaurant at 67-16 Songhak 1-gil in Yadang, Paju. The writer ordered the 1kg steamed female blue crab for ₩53,000 and clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) for ₩10,000. The owner helped prepare the crab so it was easy to eat, and the kalguksu came with plenty of clams and a clean, refreshing broth. With camping-style outdoor seating, arcade machines, a fan for every guest and free ice cream, Camping Garden in Yadang is a solid choice for family dinners or group get-togethers.

Sokcho market tempura, cheesy baby crab on a rainy weekday: Hwangbuja

Hwangbuja Twigim (황부자튀김) is a tempura shop on the fried food street of Sokcho Central Market (Sokcho Tourism & Fish Market) in Sokcho, Gangwon. On a rainy weekday around 2 p.m., Hwangbuja Twigim had no wait, and the meal there was king shrimp tempura, cheese-seasoned baby crab tempura, pepper-only tempura and old-style sikhye (sweet rice drink). Crispy without being hard, the baby crab tempura at Hwangbuja Twigim is a must-try for anyone who loves baby crab.

Paju Unjeong Chinese restaurant with rosé-like jjamppong: Sannaemaeul

Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is a lamb skewer and Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of World Tower 3, 573 Chaekhyanggi-ro, in Unjeong, Paju. On this visit, a regular ordered 2 servings of lamb rib skewers, jjangban jjamppong (spicy seafood noodles served on a platter) and a small sweet and sour pork, and the owner added a free bean sprout stir-fry. Beyond the lamb skewers, Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is worth seeking out in Paju for its rosé-like jjangban jjamppong and sweet and sour pork in a thick sauce.

Paju Unjeong BBQ with refillable onion-chili pickles: Tannae Paju

Tannae Paju Main Branch is a briquette-charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant on the Garam-maeul restaurant strip in Unjeong, Paju. Two people ate 5 servings at Tannae — 2 servings of selected pork belly, 2 of pork jowl, 1 of marinated pork skin, plus bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles) — and refilled the onion-cheongyang chili pickles and the lettuce-and-perilla sauce three times. Staff handle the first grilling and the seats are roomy, so Tannae works for both family meals and company dinners.

Paju BBQ restaurant: short rib and scallop wraps, Minine Gogi Nakwon

Minine Gogi Nakwon is an all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ restaurant on Beonyeong-ro in Geumchon, Paju, serving prime short ribs and beef intestine for 12 years. The writer ordered Set 3 — beef, prime short ribs, beef intestine and scallops plus 21 more items — and wrapped the prime short ribs together with scallop meat, then moved on to fat-rich beef intestine and thick makchang with no gamey smell. That one beef-and-scallop bite alone was worth booking a return visit to Minine Gogi Nakwon.

Chuncheon noodle spot with buckwheat jang kalguksu: Hyeondae Memil

Hyeondae Memil is a buckwheat specialty restaurant on Namchun-ro 5beon-gil in Chuncheon, Gangwon, known for the truffle potato pancake that went viral on social media. On a weekday visit around 2pm there was one party waiting, and the meal was sous vide pork tenderloin at 20,600 won, truffle potato pancake at 16,600 won and buckwheat jang kalguksu (spicy noodle soup) at 11,600 won. The side dishes were generous and the room is pretty, making Hyeondae Memil an easy pick for a date in Chuncheon.
