Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap (심학산 들꽃쌈밥) is a ssambap (leaf-wrap rice) Korean set-meal restaurant at the foot of Simhaksan in Paju, Gyeonggi, close to Lotte Premium Outlets Paju. On a Simhaksan outing, the writer took their parents to lunch and ordered both the Flower set (26,000 won, with grilled mackerel and Atka mackerel) and the Deul set (20,000 won, with spicy stir-fried pork and squid), along with self-serve wrap greens, pumpkin porridge and stone pot nurungji (scorched rice). The parents said it was their first proper Korean set meal in a long time, making Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap a satisfying choice for a family lunch.

Paju Chinese restaurant after outlet shopping: chili pesto jjajang

Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch (돌판석짬뽕 파주심학산점) is a Chinese restaurant serving stone-plate jjajang (black bean noodles) and jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) in the Simhaksan dining area near Lotte Premium Outlets in Paju, Gyeonggi. After shopping at the outlets, the writer and his wife ordered a medium (2-person) chili pesto stone jjajang, shrimp fried rice, and plum and grapefruit ades made with house syrups. They especially liked the jjajang nurungji (scorched noodles and sauce) on the bottom of the stone plate and pairing the fried rice with green onion kimchi from the self-serve bar. Verdict: for anyone who enjoys spicy food, the chili pesto stone jjajang at Dolpanseok Jjamppong is a pleasant kick that is easy to take on.

After a first visit with her child, the writer returned to Long Time No See Yadang Branch with her husband. They sat at a window seat with the folding doors open and ate a tomato spinach pizza with a cheese crust, rosé cream rabokki (ramen and tteokbokki rice cakes) and cheese rabokki. Verdict: of the two rabokki, the cheese rabokki won by a landslide.

Unjeong Chinese restaurant with dogs: mild Mimi jjamppong, Mimi China

Mimi China (미미차이나) is a dog-friendly Chinese restaurant at 71-1 Cheonjeonggu-ro in Unjeong, Paju, Gyeonggi. On a trip to Paju with their dogs, the writer ordered gganjjajang (stir-fried black bean noodles, 10,000 won), the mild Mimi jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup, 12,000 won) and tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork, 20,000 won), and the glossy gganjjajang and the ramen-meets-jjamppong flavour of the Mimi jjamppong stood out. Mimi China is worth recommending if you want good jjajangmyeon and jjamppong with your dog along.

Paju Book City dumpling spot: sold-out mung bean pancake, Bubyeokjeong

Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu (부벽정평양만두) is a Pyongyang-style dumpling restaurant in Paju Book City, Gyeonggi, in the same complex as Paju Lotte Outlets. On a weekday evening the writer ordered Pyongyang mandu soup (11,000 won), mandu jjabagi (12,000 won) and the mung bean pancake (10,000 won) that had been sold out on every earlier visit; the mandu soup came in a clear, mild meat broth, while the mandu jjabagi was a little richer and slightly spicy. The three dishes made a filling dinner, and Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu is a good dumpling stop after shopping at Paju Lotte Outlets.
