Jonggak sashimi restaurant with quiet rooms for old friends: Suksseong
In short
Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is an aged sashimi restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, about a 7-minute walk from Jonggak Station Exit 4, and every table there is in a private room. Catching up with an old friend on a Monday evening, the writer ordered cuttlefish perilla-oil makguksu (buckwheat noodles, 29,000 won), a small aged sashimi platter (69,000 won) and clam fish cake soup (27,000 won), and even as a live-fish sashimi fan was won over by the aged fish's deep savory flavor and soft texture. Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is a good choice when you want aged sashimi and a quiet conversation.

What is Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch?
Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch (숙썽수산 종로본점) is a premium aged sashimi restaurant near Jonggak Station. The fish is aged at low temperature for more than 24 hours, which is said to give a softer, richer flavor than live fish. Besides aged sashimi, the menu has soups, fried dishes and pasta that pair well with alcohol, so it's a real find for Jongno company dinners and get-togethers.‼️
We were both swamped with real life, so it had been ages since I'd seen my friend. I wanted to spend some precious time together, looked around for good places, and landed on Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch, famous as a Jongno aged sashimi spot.❤️

Private rooms and reservations at Suksseong Susan Jongno
It's a drinking spot on the 3rd floor of a building, and even though we visited on a Monday, the place was lively and buzzing.

Every table is set up as a private room, so you get a private feel, and no wonder so many guests come. It's so popular that booking ahead on Naver Reservation is a must‼️
Side dishes: kidney beans and silken tofu

The side dishes were kidney beans and soft tofu, just right for a light nibble after ordering.
Suksseong Susan menu and what we ordered

As an aged sashimi restaurant, aged sashimi is the basic, but the menu also has seasonal raw shrimp and cuttlefish dishes. There were so many things I wanted to eat that I agonized for a while, then ordered three.
- Cuttlefish perilla-oil makguksu (buckwheat noodles)
- Small aged sashimi
- Clam odeng soup (fish cake soup)
How is the cuttlefish perilla-oil makguksu (29,000 won)?

The cuttlefish perilla-oil makguksu is ₩29,000: cuttlefish sashimi served with nutty perilla-oil buckwheat noodles. It came out right away, without a long wait❤️ The look of it was already something special, and for two people the portion is rea~~lly big.
Mixing it up nice and good~

From the first bite, the sweet perilla-oil aroma, the tangy makguksu sauce and the chewy cuttlefish sashimi make your mouth happy. It's a true standout dish.👍
Suksseong Susan free corkage rules
Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch allows free corkage only for alcohol the shop doesn't sell. That covers wine, sake, traditional liquor, whisky and kaoliang liquor, and you can bring 1 bottle per person, up to 5 bottles. Next time I'm bringing my own favorite drink.
Small aged sashimi platter (69,000 won): good even for live-fish fans?

The small aged sashimi (for 2), the restaurant's pride, is ₩69,000. It's 5–6 kinds of seasonal fish aged at low temperature for 24–36 hours, and since the species change with the season, you can apparently taste something new every visit. I liked that it kindly lists which fish are included.

I'm a live-fish person rather than an aged-sashimi person, and even so, Suksseong Susan's aged sashimi had a deeper savory flavor than live fish, and even though the slices were cut thick, every bite was really tender.
There was no fishy smell, and the taste was clean from start to finish. Being able to enjoy aged sashimi in a quiet setting makes this Jongno restaurant a huge success.
Finishing with clam fish cake soup (27,000 won)

The blessing of great dishes isn't over yet! The clam odeng soup is ₩27,000, a soup that cleanses your palate neatly⭐️ It's packed with clams, scallops and mussels.

The broth is spicy and refreshing, the kind that totally settles your stomach. Picking out the chewy clams and scallops is fun too, and every choice we made this time was excellent.👍

Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch: the verdict
Thanks to the private space and fresh ingredients, Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is a Jonggak Station drinking spot I want to recommend like crazy.
