Mangwon Hangang Park bakery, 4 breads to go: Boulangerie Copain
In short
Boulangerie Copain is a takeout bakery specializing in baguettes and croissants on Huiujeong-ro near Mangwon Hangang Park in Mapo, Seoul. On this visit, one of many since a first stop six years ago, the order was a baguette at 4,500 won, choco baguette at 7,000 won, kouign-amann at 4,800 won and angbutter at 5,500 won. The crust had softened on a humid day but came back in an air fryer, and the sweet choco baguette and crackly kouign-amann are both worth buying again.

Where to find simple, not-too-sweet bread in Mangwon-dong
You know Mangwon-dong has tons of famous bakeries, right? Most of them lean toward cream-filled sweet desserts, so today I want to recommend a place for those of you who love plain, crispy breads like baguettes and croissants!
I discovered this place years ago on a picnic trip to Mangwon-dong, and it's now become one of my go-to spots that I've visited more times than I can count 🤭
Outside Boulangerie Copain

Boulangerie Copain is a bit of a walk from Mangwon Station (about 15 minutes), but its location near Mangwon Hangang Park makes it perfect for grabbing bread on your way to a picnic! There's also a street public parking lot right in front, so it's easy to pop in and out.
Inside the shop: takeout only
Boulangerie Copain is a takeout-only spot — the small interior has no tables, and eating inside isn't allowed!

The bread lineup ranges from plain to sweet, but the signature items are really the plain ones — baguettes and croissants in particular.

Baguettes aren't on display — you have to ask
That's because this place was featured on the TV show 'Master in the House' (생활의 달인) in 2018 for its baguettes and croissants. Visit at 10am and you can get a fresh-baked, still-warm baguette :) ⭐️ Note: the baguette isn't out on the display shelf. Just ask when you're buying and they'll bring one out from the back!

Honestly, I can't single out one thing here as the tastiest, because everything I've tried has been good..🥲 And the prices are pretty reasonable too!

I'd recommend trying the baguette-based items — sandwiches, angbutter, cream cheese baguette, and more~

There's also a refrigerated section with banana pudding, palmicare (a Korean-style bread pudding), and more.

After-7pm discounts at Boulangerie Copain
If you visit after 7pm, there's an event running: 20% off purchases over ₩20,000, and 30% off over ₩30,000.
Drink menu

They also sell drinks! Not a huge variety, but pretty much everything you'd expect is there ☺️
How did the four breads taste?

What I bought: baguette (₩4,500), choco baguette (₩7,000), kouign-amann (₩4,800), and angbutter (₩5,500). With bread prices going up so much these days, isn't it pretty impressive that a spot this good is still this affordable? ✨
Choco baguette, 7,000 won: sweet in the best way
I couldn't resist eating the choco baguette on the walk home! It was a humid day so it wasn't quite as crispy as usual, but the chocolate flavor was rich and clearly high-quality.
I've heard some trendy choco baguette spots pride themselves on not being too sweet. Well, this one is sweet! And I firmly believe it should be! If you don't want it sweet, why even eat a choco baguette? (Not mad, just saying.) There were plenty of chocolate chunks too, so you really get that premium chocolate taste 🍫

It's not overwhelmingly sweet — more like the perfect sweetness for when you're craving something sugary. The crispness was a bit lacking, so I popped it in the air fryer at home, and wow..🤎 Definitely buying this again!

Baguette, 4,500 won: sliced on request
Next up, the baguette. I asked them to slice it, so this is how I got it.
The more you chew, the more you notice a slight tang and nutty flavor. The bread itself tastes genuinely good — you can tell they're using quality flour!

The photo above is from the very first time I tried Boulangerie Copain — six years ago..! (They used to have a green tea scone that was amazing too. Why isn't it around anymore..?) I never used to be into plain bread, but even back then I really enjoyed this place's baguette.

Kouign-amann, 4,800 won: crackly even on a humid day
Next, the kouign-amann. I'm a kouign-amann lover who always picks one up at any bakery.. and this one looked sweet and delicious, so I grabbed it too.
Please just listen to the sound of this kouign-amann being cut.. it was such a humid day that all the other breads had gone a bit soggy, but—

The syrup and pastry on the outside meet in this crackly, crispy, absolutely delicious way! The syrup flavor wasn't just heavy and sweet either — it was genuinely tasty. Another one I'd definitely buy again 🥲

Angbutter, 5,500 won: comes cut into four pieces
Last but not least, the angbutter, which I've bought more times than I can count. Even on the display shelf, it's wrapped like this in parchment paper.
It comes cut into 4 generous pieces. Butter and red bean paste inside a tasty baguette — how could that combination not be good?

It tastes even better when you dig in with flour dusting your hands 😋 Nutty, plain, and sweet all at once — I recommend the angbutter too! 🧡
Is Boulangerie Copain worth a repeat visit?
This is a bakery my whole family loves, and the prices are genuinely good, so I hope it sticks around for a long time :) There are still menu items I haven't tried, but based on everything I've had over the years, it's all been delicious 🤍
Try the items I've recommended, and if you find something even better, let me know! I recommend this place to anyone near Mangwon-dong who's tired of overly sweet bread and prefers something plain 👍
