In short
Wonjo Chogyetang (원조초계탕) is a Korean restaurant near Jungang Station in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi, specializing in chogyetang (chilled chicken soup). On a third visit, made by bicycle with a friend after work on a Friday, the chogyetang set for two (35,000 won) came with a clean, fruit-based broth with no gamey smell, followed by buckwheat pancake, seasoned chicken, buckwheat noodles and a North Korean-style dessert. Cycling to Wonjo Chogyetang in Dongducheon after work on a Friday
I visited on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Wonjo Chogyetang (원조초계탕) on Eosu-ro in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi. After work on Friday, I went with an acquaintance to this chogyetang (cold chicken soup) restaurant near Dongducheon Jungang Station.

While cycling, I suddenly noticed how beautiful Dongducheon looked, so I stopped the bike and took a photo. Then we headed on to the restaurant.

Our destination was Wonjo Chogyetang. This was my third visit.

Is there parking at Wonjo Chogyetang?

There is a parking area at Wonjo Chogyetang, though it's on the small side.

I parked my bike and went inside. You take your shoes off, put them in the shoe locker, and then enter the dining room.

Inside Wonjo Chogyetang: atmosphere

The inside was as warm and homey as ever. The place has been around a long time, but it's very clean and tidy. We sat down and looked over the menu, trying to decide what to eat.
Wonjo Chogyetang menu and prices: chogyetang set for two, ₩35,000

If you come to a chogyetang restaurant, you have to order chogyetang, right? ^^ Without much deliberation, we ordered the chogyetang set for two.

While the food was being prepared, we had a look around the restaurant.

Wonjo Chogyetang has appeared on many TV programs, including KBS's Saengsaeng Jeongbo, TV Chosun's Heo Young-man's Baekban Travelogue (Sikgaek), and KBS's 6 O'clock My Hometown. It's a well-known restaurant for good reason.

I liked that the country-of-origin labeling was clearly and transparently posted.

The notice says that, after much agonizing over soaring prices, they raised prices by the bare minimum!? Honestly, prices these days are insane... I don't know if they'll ever settle down... ;;;

I also read the guide on how to enjoy the set meal best. It was mildly entertaining, haha.

We were looking around and chatting about this and that when the food arrived.
How does the chogyetang at Wonjo Chogyetang taste?

The chogyetang here is packed with fresh vegetables, the chicken is chewy, and there's no gamey smell at all. I tried the chogyetang first, of course!?

There were loads of fresh vegetables, and the chicken had a nice chewy texture. Since there was no gamey chicken smell at all, I looked it up on YouTube, and apparently they don't hold back on fruit like apples, pears and pineapple when making the broth. The natural sweetness and aroma of the fruit make the broth fantastic. I'm a bit sensitive to sugar and seasoning additives, and here I definitely couldn't taste any of that. It was clean, which I loved.

Buckwheat pancake with chicken salad
The buckwheat pancake (memiljeon) in the set is nutty and tasty on its own, but eating it with the chicken salad (dakmuchim) added a tangy, spicy kick and went much better.

I strongly recommend eating the buckwheat pancake with the chicken salad!!!
One chicken wing per person
The chicken wings come per person, so we got two. My companion is much younger than me, so I gave up my wing. They ate it so happily, haha. Watching them enjoy it made me feel full already ^^

Buckwheat noodles and rolled noodles
Once we'd eaten a fair amount of the chogyetang, the owner brought buckwheat noodles and poured them into the soup. She said she'd bring more if we wanted, but there was already so much food that we waved it off. The buckwheat noodles were very soft and slurped down fast.
The rolled noodles (doldolmari-myeon) were the ultimate in sourness. Eaten as an appetizer, they'd probably really kick-start the appetite.

Finishing with a North Korean-style dessert
Last came a North Korean-style dessert. The bread had red bean paste inside, and it was just sweet enough without being overly sweet. Delicious.

And so we left the restaurant, very well fed and happy.

It felt like I'd looked after both my taste buds and my health at Wonjo Chogyetang in Dongducheon, so it was a lovely day.
