Cheongju Chinese restaurant, QR-order ganjajang: Julseoneun Banjeom

In short

Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae is a Chinese restaurant in Osong, Cheongju, across from Chungcheong University and right next to Cheongju IC. On a weekday lunch visit, the writer waited out a full house, then ordered sirloin ganjajang (stir-fried black bean noodles) and beef brisket jjamppong (noodle soup) by table QR code; the smoky ganjajang and the shrimp-and-brisket jjamppong broth were not overly harsh, making them easy to share with kids and parents. Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae is a hearty meal worth recommending before or after a trip.

This is a review of my lunch at Julseoneun Banjeom, a Cheongju restaurant near Osong. It's right in front of Chungcheong University, and Cheongju IC is just next door, so it's a perfect spot for a satisfying meal right before you set off on a trip, or right as you're wrapping one up. Chinese restaurant menus are loved by everyone regardless of age, making them perfect for family outings and all kinds of gatherings — always a popular choice. So this time, I headed to Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae, located by Chungcheong University, to enjoy exactly that.

Weekday lunch wait — true to its name, a line-up restaurant

When I arrived at Julseoneun Banjeom on a weekday, the seats were already full and there was a bit of a wait, but thanks to the fast table turnover typical of Chinese restaurants, I didn't have to wait long before getting in. Even while I was waiting, customers kept steadily arriving and lining up — living up to its name, which literally means "the restaurant where people line up." Just a heads-up that there can be a wait even on weekday lunches, so plan accordingly :)

Inside Julseoneun Banjeom Gangnae

Since the interior was already full, it was hard to get a shot with customers around, but I managed to snap a photo of a table that briefly emptied out. Everything needed was neatly arranged on the table. This Cheongju Chinese restaurant felt like a place to enjoy a relaxed meal away from the busy city, in a quiet neighborhood — something I really liked about it.

Order by QR code, side dishes at a self-serve bar

At Julseoneun Banjeom, you order by scanning the QR code placed on the table. You can easily pick whatever menu you want, and once you tap the order button, the order goes through automatically and the screen switches to an order-confirmation page.

At first, pickled radish and onion are provided, and after that, anything else you need can be grabbed from the self-serve bar. Since it's a Chinese restaurant, it's probably a good idea to wear an apron to avoid getting food splashed on your clothes while eating.

I curbed my hunger for a bit with the neatly arranged onion and pickled radish while waiting for my order, and it wasn't long before the dishes I ordered came out.

What I ordered ❓ ✅ Sirloin ganjajang ✅ Beef brisket jjamppong

How does the sirloin ganjajang taste? Smoky wok flavor and thick cuts of meat

I ordered sirloin ganjajang and beef brisket jjamppong. The sirloin ganjajang came out first — seeing the bowl piled generously with vegetables and black bean sauce made my mouth water, and I polished the whole thing off for lunch that day.

Isn't ganjajang really all about pouring the sauce generously right onto the noodles and mixing it all together? The dish looked so good I started eating right away.

Since the ganjajang is stir-fried to order, the smoky wok flavor and the texture of the vegetables really stand out, and the rich savoriness of the black bean paste was great. The crunchy onions and the thick chunks of pork pairing with the noodles made every bite good — not greasy at all, just cleanly delicious with that smoky wok flavor.

What does the beef brisket jjamppong broth taste like?

The big shrimp and scallion garnish on top of the beef brisket jjamppong really boosted the dish's flavor. The savory juices from the beef brisket blended into the broth, and together with the jjamppong's flavor, the spiciness was just right.

The jjamppong broth wasn't too intense or spicy, so it was easy to enjoy the noodles along with the broth, and the chewy texture of the noodles was great too. With the vegetables in the jjamppong and the refreshing broth, it was a great dish to cool down with in the hot summer. It's a great place to visit with kids, and a good spot to bring your parents for a delicious, filling meal 😊
