Yangju galbi restaurant, plain then marinated pork ribs for two: Manpo

In short

Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch is a pork galbi (grilled ribs) restaurant on Songnang-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi, specialising in Handon (Korean-raised pork). On a Saturday around 2 p.m., two diners with a reservation ordered 2 servings of plain Handon pork ribs and 1 serving of handmade marinated Handon ribs for 61,000 won, with 10 side dishes including yukjeon (beef pancakes) and mini yukhoe (beef tartare), plus a free bowl of house-made Hamheung naengmyeon (cold noodles) each. Verdict: Manpo Galbi is a generous rib house worth a return visit, best enjoyed plain ribs first, marinated ribs second, with yukhoe mixed into spicy bibim naengmyeon.

Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch (만포갈비 양주본점) lives up to its name by serving guests generously. We went as a couple and ate until we were stuffed, and it was so good that I really want to recommend it. 😊

What did two people order, and for how much?

We ordered 2 servings of Hanwoo-pork raw galbi (₩21,000 × 2) and 1 serving of handmade galbi (₩19,000), which came to ₩61,000 in total. On top of that, each diner gets a bowl of handmade Hamheung naengmyeon (cold noodles) free!

  • Hanwoo raw galbi (21.0) × 2
  • Hanwoo handmade galbi (19.0)
  • = total 61.0
  • Free perk: one bowl of handmade Hamheung naengmyeon per diner

Ordering tip: raw galbi starts at 2 servings

The Hanwoo raw galbi can only be ordered from 2 servings. The handmade galbi can be added one serving at a time! So for two people, 2 servings of raw galbi plus 1 of handmade galbi was just right.

Ten side dishes, including yukjeon and mini yukhoe

Once you sit down, 9 side dishes are set out, and with the pickled onion that makes 10. It's a neat table so full the legs could break. The portions are really generous too, and I felt the place gave without holding back all through the meal.

  • Side dish quality: you can feel the care in each one, and they're clean and perfect with the meat.
  • Special sides: the sides even include yukjeon (battered beef pan-fry) and mini yukhoe (beef tartare), and the quality and taste were so good I couldn't believe they come as standard.

How was the Hanwoo raw galbi?

The Hanwoo raw galbi (₩21,000, ordered from 2 servings) comes in big chunks, and the meat itself is very fresh and good. The texture differs a bit by cut, so you get both mild, tender parts and chewier parts, which is a charm. The meat on the bone was especially tender, so you really get the fun and flavor of gnawing on ribs.

Is the handmade marinated pork galbi too sweet?

The Hanwoo handmade galbi (₩19,000, one serving can be ordered) isn't too sweet, with a just-right sweet-salty balance, so I never got tired of it. You can taste the skill of the signature dish. The meat was super tender, and it goes best of all with the naengmyeon I'll explain below 👍🏻

How big is the free naengmyeon at Manpo Galbi?

Free Hamheung naengmyeon, one bowl per person

When you eat meat at Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch, they give you a bowl of handmade Hamheung naengmyeon (broth or spicy mixed) per person as a freebie.. WOW, it's the highlight. Don't think of the usual small after-meal noodles just because it's free! The portion is much more generous, so unless you need a stew on the side, meat plus naengmyeon alone makes a filling meal...!

Best combo: yukhoe bibim naengmyeon and eating it like a course

Mixing yukhoe bibim naengmyeon
  • Make yukhoe bibim naengmyeon: put the mini yukhoe from the side dishes on top of the spicy mixed noodles! You get a fantastic yukhoe bibim naengmyeon that rivals a specialty shop. (It'd probably be great in the broth noodles too, haha.)
  • Eat it like a course: I strongly recommend starting with the clean, mild raw pork galbi, then moving on to the marinated pork galbi, wrapping the free naengmyeon in with it!

Overall verdict on Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch

True to its name, Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch was generous, with excellent meat and a free handmade naengmyeon service, and nothing was lacking. It's a galbi spot worth visiting whether you live nearby or have to travel a bit.

  • Would I return: 100%
  • Recommended for: family outings, group gatherings, and anyone who wants to enjoy tasty pork galbi with naengmyeon
