Busan noodle shop, after-work solo bibim and mandu: Seomyeon Milmyeon

Seomyeon Milmyeon is a milmyeon (Busan-style wheat noodle) restaurant in EOS Plaza, near Exit 8 of Seomyeon Station in Busan. On a weekday after work, the writer came alone at 6pm and ordered a regular bibim milmyeon (10,000 won) and mandu (dumplings, 7,500 won) at the kiosk: the bibim milmyeon had a sesame-oil aroma and a spicy, tangy, sweet sauce, the mandu had thin, chewy wrappers, and the portions were so big the writer felt fit to burst. Seomyeon Milmyeon is a great spot for a filling solo meal in Seomyeon.

Gupo, Busan Chinese restaurant after-work couple dinner: Hongmigwan

Hongmigwan (홍미관) is a Chinese restaurant that makes its own noodles, near Gupo Market in Buk-gu, Busan. On a weekday after work, around 7 pm, a couple ordered four dishes at Hongmigwan (samseon jjamppong, uni-jjajang, japchebap and mini tangsuyuk) and finished every one, with the bouncy, jjolmyeon-like noodles and the crispy sauce-poured tangsuyuk as the highlights. Hongmigwan may not be a once-in-a-lifetime Chinese restaurant, but overall it is a clean, good-value Chinese restaurant in Gupo.

No-wait galchi jorim dinner near Sanbangsan, Jeju: Sikgwa Hamkke

Sikgwa Hamkke Jeju Sanbangsan Branch is a boneless galchi jorim (braised cutlassfish) restaurant in Hwasun, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, near Sanbangsan on Jeju. On the second night of a Jeju trip, the writer skipped the long lines at the famous cutlassfish restaurants nearby, took a bus to Sikgwa Hamkke, and ordered the boneless galchi jorim for two (45,000 won) with Hallasan soju, which came as a 12-dish spread with abalone-conch-shrimp rice, fried cutlassfish belly, and soy-marinated crab. The stew's seasoning at Sikgwa Hamkke was only so-so, but the home-style side dishes were in a class of their own.
