Family dinner gukbap after a CT Theater play in Daegu: Hanwoojang

Hanwoojang is a 24-hour gukbap (rice soup) restaurant on Gukchaebosang-ro near Jungangno Station in Jung-gu, Daegu. After an evening family play at CT Theater on Jungang-ro, the family ate a spicy ttaro-gukbap (beef soup with rice on the side) with large chunks of seonji (ox blood curd) and a seolleongtang (ox bone soup) generously filled with thin-sliced beef, which the kids liked so much they said they wanted it every morning. With dishes for both children and adults, Hanwoojang is a solid choice for dinner on a family outing.

Gwangmyeong jjukkumi restaurant with cheese pork cutlet: Jeongipum

Jeongipum Jjukkumi Gwangmyeong 1st Branch is a griddle-cooked jjukkumi (baby octopus) restaurant on the 1st floor of AK Plaza in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi. After 90 minutes at Gwangmyeong Cave, the writer arrived at 6pm and ordered the basic griddle jjukkumi for two, a cheese pork cutlet and flying fish roe rice balls, and a staff member stir-fried everything at the table and explained how to eat it, so the octopus never turned chewy and the finishing fried rice came easily. Free parking in the AK Plaza underground lot made Jeongipum Jjukkumi an easy family dinner even for visitors coming from out of town.

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is a chicken hot pot and bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) restaurant a 3-minute walk from the Dongdaemun Market malls in Jongno, Seoul. A family worn out from shopping with the kids arrived around 3pm and ordered one pot of dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) plus cold noodles, mixing their own dipping sauce from minced garlic, mustard and soy sauce for the tender chicken. On a sweltering summer day, the family called the meal at Sunhuine the ultimate restorative dish.

Aged kimchi pork bone stew for three in Itaewon, Seoul: Nuri Maeul

Nuri Maeul Gamjatang Itaewon Branch is a 24-hour gamjatang (pork bone stew) and hangover soup restaurant on the second floor of the building in front of Itaewon Station Exit 4 in Yongsan, Seoul. Three of us ordered the small aged kimchi gamjatang and it arrived like a large size, with half a head of kimchi and a generous amount of siraegi (dried radish greens), plus fresh kimchi and cubed radish from the self-serve corner. The meat slipped off the bones with no effort, making Nuri Maeul a good call for a hangover cure after drinks or a family and group dinner.
