Café near Sinheungsa Temple in Sokcho: Mont Blanc at Cafe Neorae

Cafe Neorae is a large bakery café on Wonam-haksapyeong-gil in the Haksapyeong area of Sokcho, with views of Ulsanbawi rock on Seoraksan. On the way back from Sinheungsa Temple, about 19 minutes away by car, the writer and her mom arrived at 3pm on a weekday and took a 2nd-floor window seat for sua da einspänner, an americano and Mont Blanc. The sua da einspänner and Mont Blanc together was the most memorable pairing, and Cafe Neorae is worth another stop on a return trip to Sokcho.

Grilled dried pollack near Seoraksan in Sokcho: Daecheongmaru

Daecheongmaru is a Korean restaurant in Hangsapyeong Tofu Village, Nohak-dong, Sokcho, specializing in Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) and hwangtae (dried pollack). Over a late lunch with her mother, the writer ordered the Sokcho grilled hwangtae, two fish for 32,000 won, made with pollack from the drying yards of Yongdae-ri and served with a full spread of banchan; the pollack was crisp outside and tender inside, and the nutty pollack soup beat expectations. With a large free lot and friendly staff, Daecheongmaru is an easy Sokcho restaurant to bring parents to.

Sokcho sundubu restaurant with Ulsanbawi views and a pet hall: Jinsol

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a soft tofu (sundubu) restaurant on Wonamhaksapyeong-gil in the Haksapyeong area of Sokcho, Gangwon. Arriving around 10:30am with her mom and her dog, the writer sat in the restaurant's separate dog-friendly hall and ordered Chodang sundubu for 12,000 won and jjamppong seafood sundubu for 17,000 won, with the seafood bowl — packed with abalone, shrimp, squid and scallops — the clear favourite. Between the wide parking lot and the view of Ulsanbawi rock right in front, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a Sokcho breakfast stop worth returning to.
