Dongseong-ro Korean restaurant for couples: smoky jjukkumi, Cafe Dongi

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean restaurant with individual grill trays, on the 2nd floor in the middle of Dongseong-ro, Daegu. A couple shared jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), jjukkumi-bokkeum (stir-fried webfoot octopus) and a mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) sampler, with rice refills, a self-serve fried egg corner and gangjeong for dessert. The jjukkumi-bokkeum at Cafe Dongi was more tender and smokier than a well-known jjukkumi spot in the writer's neighborhood, and is worth a return visit.

Daegu lunch for two with yukhoe mul-hoe and kimchi mandu: Taegyeongok

Taegyeongok is a Korean restaurant serving seasonal dishes on Gukchebosang-ro in Dongin-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, a short walk from Gyeongbuk Hospital Station. Two diners ordered the extra-large Hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl, 15,000 won) and the Hanwoo yukhoe mul-hoe (chilled raw beef soup, 15,000 won), and received 3 pieces of kimchi mandu through a review event. The yukhoe was generous enough to be half rice and half raw beef, and the tidy dining room made Taegyeongok an easy choice for lunch or a date.

Vietnamese restaurant in Sangin-dong, Daegu: banh xeo set at Laichen

Laichen Wolseong Branch is a Vietnamese restaurant on a main road in Sangin-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, run by a Vietnamese owner. The writer ordered the 2-person A set, which brings all three signatures together — Hanoi-style pho (10,000 won), charcoal-grilled bun cha (13,500 won) and banh xeo (15,500 won) — and wrapped the banh xeo in dry rice paper at the table. The spicing is gentle enough for anyone new to Vietnamese food, and the writer would return 100 percent.
