Gwangju jokbal restaurant, 4pm opening for a couple set: Kkankkanhan

In short

Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch (깐깐한족발 용봉점) is a jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork wraps) restaurant in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, across from the Starbucks at Jeon Cheol-woo intersection. After finding no free tables at 6pm on a first visit, the writer arrived at the 4pm opening and ordered the 48,000 won couple set with charcoal-grilled jokbal, eating fish cake soup, steamed egg and makguksu (buckwheat noodles) at the same table. Thanks to the cool dining room and generous set, Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch was good enough to book again for the next get-together.

No seats at 6pm, so a 4pm opening run

Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch opens at 4pm. On my first visit I got there a little after 6 and there were no seats! So today I did an opening run at 4. I eat jokbal a lot, so I compare a lot, and this place was more than just decent in both taste and set composition. If you're looking for a good jokbal spot in Yongbong-dong, I'd recommend it for a filling set meal. It's clean, trustworthy and the kind of place I'll crave again, so let me tell you about it.

Cool the moment you walk in: a comfortable hall

❄️ The moment I opened the door, the cool air was out of this world... I was about to collapse from the heat, and it totally recharged me. In summer the food matters, but the space has to be comfortable too for it to go down well. The whole place felt clean and tidy, so it was easy to relax over a meal. I liked that it looked hygienically kept, too.

What's in the ₩48,000 couple set?

The couple set at Kkankkanhan Yongbong Branch is ₩48,000 and comes with jokbal [medium] or bossam (boiled pork slices) [medium], makguksu (buckwheat noodles) [medium] and a drink, with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and steamed egg in the basic side dishes. Even the basic spread is generous.

🥘 The set was really generous. Along with the jokbal came fish cake soup, steamed egg and makguksu as standard, so full that you don't need to order anything extra.

The charm of charcoal-grilled jokbal

What I chose at Kkankkanhan that day was the charcoal-grilled jokbal. True to the name ("kkankkanhan" means picky or strict), you can feel how strictly they handle everything from ingredients to cooking. The tender jokbal was impressive from the very first bite.

It melts in your mouth, and the savory depth is so good that your chopsticks keep going back.

A slice of charcoal-grilled jokbal with smoky aroma

There's no gamey smell, so it's clean to eat, and the charcoal grilling adds a faint smoky aroma, giving a mild yet rich flavor. After tasting this, I wonder if anyone doesn't know this place as a Yongbong-dong jokbal favorite.

Fish cake soup served with the jokbal

Fish cake soup (odeng-tang)

A hot, refreshing broth with chewy skewered fish cakes, perfect alongside the jokbal.

Soft steamed egg

Steamed egg (gyeran-jjim)

It's soft like sundubu (soft tofu), a taste everyone from kids to adults will like.

Sweet, sour and spicy makguksu

Makguksu (buckwheat noodles)

Tossed sweet, sour and spicy, it wipes away any greasiness and pairs well with the jokbal.

Table spread with jokbal and side dishes

Whether you come with friends or family, the set satisfies everyone, so I really recommend it as a gathering spot. Everyone was amazed at the generously laid-out table. A place with this quality and composition is the real Yongbong-dong gem!

100% revisit: the best choice for Yongbong-dong jokbal

💯 Tender, hygienically handled jokbal in a cool, clean hall, with a charcoal-grilled option and a perfect set menu: that's Kkankkanhan.
