I love Korean food so much that I try every Korean restaurant I can find, and this time I went to Cafe Dongyi (카페동이), one of my favorite Korean food brands! Despite the name, it's not a café where you drink beverages. It's a Korean restaurant serving neat, tidy set meals!!!
We started with a date at Suseongmot for the first time in a while haha, and then headed straight to Cafe Dongyi Branch 1 with my husband!!!
Where is Cafe Dongyi Branch 1, and is there parking?
Cafe Dongyi Branch 1 is a Korean restaurant near Hwanggeum Station, on the Deulan-gil street by Suseongmot, and you can park free for 2 hours in the Homeplus underground car park of the SK Leaders View building. They say 1 million people have visited over 13 years, and with such easy parking it suits all ages!
The Hwanggeum Station branch sits right next to Coffee Myeongga along the main road, and you can park free (2 hours) in the Homeplus underground car park of SK Leaders View! Take the Homeplus elevator up to street level and it's right in front of you!
What are the wait and seating like?
Cafe Dongyi Branch 1 is a small restaurant over two floors, and by noon it's already full, so you may have to wait!! It's so popular that people line up before opening.
And even if you sit on the 2nd floor, the staff serve everything, so there's no need to go downstairs!
What makes the Cafe Dongyi set meals special?
Cafe Dongyi Branch 1 in Suseong is a brand restaurant run by an executive chef with 15 years of Korean cooking experience. The spread made with house-made sauces and side dishes is impressive!
The Korean menu is varied and new items are added often! And the multigrain rice, fried eggs and gangjeong (sweet crispy snack) are self-serve with unlimited refills! haha
You can enjoy multigrain rice made with Gimpo gold rice grown in the clean Gimpo DMZ area, and I always ask for the rice first haha. In summer like now, you can also get yeolmu (young radish) bibimbap!!
What does Cafe Dongyi's nuruk sirloin tangsuyuk taste like?
Cafe Dongyi's nuruk sirloin tangsuyuk (Korean sweet-and-sour pork) is aged with traditional rice nuruk (fermentation starter), and it's the most appealing item on the menu, so I recommend adding it haha. It's gluten-free and uses no wheat flour at all, so your stomach feels fine afterward.
They say they use only clean oil, checked daily with an acid value tester, and the sauce comes separately by default so you can dip!!
Snip the nuruk tangsuyuk with scissors, squeeze on lemon juice and nom nom! There are rice cake pieces too, so the texture is great and the sauce is a work of art haha. It's my favorite tangsuyuk, and it sits well in your stomach afterward ❤️

Is the beef-belly perilla seaweed soup set good for a hangover?
Cafe Dongyi's beef-belly perilla seaweed soup set was really good as a hangover meal. It jumped out at me on the menu so I ordered it, and it was a proper bowl of seaweed soup for the first time in a while haha.
Adding beef belly makes the texture and the flavor of the seaweed soup even better!! It felt like my stomach just melted and relaxed?! It was so good as a hangover cure haha.
Cafe Dongyi's best seller: the Dongyi fire-grilled set meal
My husband tucked into Cafe Dongyi's best seller, the Dongyi fire-grilled set meal! Whenever he comes to Cafe Dongyi he only orders this haha. The fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) really delivers!
The default soup for the fire-grilled set meal is your choice of kimchi stew or doenjang (soybean paste) stew, and the side dishes that come with it are all tidy and neat! This set also comes with a drink you can have for dessert!
Just finishing these set meals alone would be super filling hahaha, and we also ordered a small tangsuyuk, so double full haha.
What should you dip the nuruk tangsuyuk in?
At Cafe Dongyi there are several things to dip your tangsuyuk in. Salt, wasabi, mustard sauce, soy sauce?! haha
Personally, the best way is the default nuruk tangsuyuk sauce topped with mustard sauce!!! And a cold glass of cider to finish ❤️
