Why a meat lover chose Donggok for a solo meal in Dongseong-ro, Daegu

I've been feeling run-down lately, so I went solo to Donggok Jemyeon Daegu Dongseong-ro Main Branch to recover with a filling meal. Just samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) felt lacking, and just kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) felt short on protein, so samgye kalguksu — chicken piled on noodles — immediately came to mind.

I'm seriously a certified meat person. How do I never get tired of eating meat all three meals every single day lol lol lol. Seafood often doesn't tempt me at all, but meat always does haha. And carbs used to not be something I ate that often, but lately I've been eating them more frequently. I guess my energy is really dropping these days ㅠㅠㅠ

So since my strength hasn't felt like it used to and I've been feeling weak often, I looked into eating something more filling, and suddenly samgye kalguksu — deep, rich broth with chicken piled on top — came to mind. Just samgyetang felt too lacking and just kalguksu was short on protein haha. So this time I visited the famously popular Dongseong-ro restaurant in downtown Daegu, 'Donggok Jemyeon Daegu Dongseong-ro Main Branch'!!

What and how much did I order alone

At Donggok I ordered the extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu (13,000 won) and a gabrisal (pork jowl) suyuk half-plate (10,900 won). Even solo, pairing kalguksu with a half-plate of suyuk let me enjoy bossam-style pork without it feeling like too much.

There were so many delicious menu items I had trouble deciding, but since my body's been seriously in rough shape ㅠㅠㅠㅠ I ordered the ultimate recovery dish, extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu, and a suyuk half-plate made with the prized gabrisal cut!

The moment I ordered, today's spread came out piled high in a big bowl! The second I saw it my mouth watered instantly ㅠㅠㅠ. Having a suyuk half-plate alongside the noodles meant I could enjoy gabrisal bossam without feeling guilty about it.

How does Donggok's extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu taste?

Donggok's extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu is made with broth simmered over 10 hours with medicinal herbs and chicken bones, topped with a whole half chicken. The broth was deep and rich, with a warmth that felt like it reached down into my body.

The look of the extra-concentrated samgye kalguksu is no joke — a hefty half chicken sits whole on top of rich broth simmered over 10 hours with medicinal herbs and chicken bones ㅠㅠ

One spoonful of the broth and the deep, rich flavor is pure artistry — it warms you right down into your body lol lol lol

How tender is the half chicken?

I pulled the chicken apart with my chopsticks and it was boiled so thoroughly that the meat just fell off the bone lol lol lol. Shredding off a bite and eating it, there's zero dryness — it just melts away ㅠㅠ

The texture of the house-made fresh noodles

Probably because they're hand-kneaded fresh every single morning, the chewy springy texture of the noodles was seriously insane, no joke. Not a hint of flour smell, and they never went soggy even to the last bite — super satisfying lol lol lol

Gabrisal suyuk half-plate — how does it pair with the kalguksu?

Donggok's suyuk half-plate is made from gabrisal, so it was moist and chewy, with a clean savory flavor that paired well with the kalguksu. Topping it with muchim-style radish strips and kimchi and wrapping it up completely cuts any richness.

This is a suyuk half-plate made with the prized gabrisal cut — moist, chewy texture, juices bursting completely lol lol lol. Clean and savory flavor that pairs amazingly with the noodles!

Piling crunchy pickled radish strips and kimchi on top of the suyuk and wrapping it up in one bite cuts all the richness and is seriously addictive ㅠㅠ. This place's kimchi is absolutely insane lol lol lol. And then topping a bite of the kalguksu noodles with the spicy, tangy kimchi and slurping it up in one go is pure healing itself lol lol lol
