Sokcho snack shop: 2 ramen-crunch oranda for ₩10,000, Sokcho Yetgokgan

In short

Sokcho Yetgokgan (속초옛곳간) is a snack shop on Dakjeon Street in Sokcho Jungang Market, Gangwon, specializing in oranda (puffed-grain clusters bound with syrup), old-fashioned cookies, gangjeong (crunchy grain bars) and yugwa (fried rice crackers). After trying a free sample, the writer bought 2 oranda for ₩10,000 (₩6,000 each); they broke apart with a light, airy crunch rather than being hard, mixing nuts and ramen snack bits with a gentle sweetness. For take-home snacks or travel gifts from Sokcho Jungang Market, Sokcho Yetgokgan is a good place to taste first and then choose.

I bought sooo much food while wandering Sokcho Jungang Market, haha! Ready-to-eat stuff like dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) and ojingeo sundae (stuffed squid) is great, but I also wanted a snack to take home or give as a gift, so I stopped by Sokcho Yetgokgan (속초옛곳간)! They sell oranda (a crunchy nut-and-grain candy snack) along with old-fashioned cookies, gangjeong (sweet grain clusters), yugwa (puffed rice crackers) and more.

Sokcho Yetgokgan is at No. 31 on Dakjeon Street in Sokcho Jungang Market, so it's easy to drop by while you browse the market. Also, I heard that if you buy something here you get a 30-minute discount ticket for the public parking lot, so if you're parking at the market, grab that too!

What snacks does Sokcho Yetgokgan sell?

Besides oranda, the shop had buckwheat chips, oatmeal gangjeong, yugwa and gwajeul (traditional fried rice cookies), all lined up. When I got to the front of the shop there were way more kinds than I expected! I thought it was just oranda, but there were snacks like buckwheat chips and oatmeal gangjeong, plus traditional treats your parents' generation would love, like yugwa and gwajeul.

There were snacks that are easy to nibble on any day, like buckwheat chips and oatmeal gangjeong, and familiar traditional sweets like yugwa and gwajeul.

When you wander the market there's so much to eat that you're already full... but this stuff you can take home, so it's a separate thing, right? haha

Does Sokcho Yetgokgan offer samples?

What I liked is that you can try samples! Honestly, if you buy a bag of market snacks and it's not to your taste, it's kind of awkward, haha. Here you can try things one by one and pick what you like, which was great.

Besides oranda, the shop had lots of snacks that work as gifts. They're easy to store and carry rather than something you have to eat right away, so they seemed good when you're looking for a Sokcho trip gift for parents or friends.

How much is oranda at Sokcho Yetgokgan? ₩6,000 each, 2 for ₩10,000

Oranda at Sokcho Yetgokgan is ₩6,000 each, or ₩10,000 for 2. We ended up buying 2! I was going to get just one, but the moment I saw the price for two... well, then obviously I'm getting two.

And if you can't visit in person, they say nationwide delivery is available. It's nice that you can try it in Sokcho and order again later when you start craving it, haha.

How is the oranda packaged?

When you open the oranda package, the pieces are neatly stacked in 2 layers, with a sheet of plastic in the middle so they don't stick together. It's easy to take them out one by one, and they come apart cleanly, which I liked.

How does the oranda at Sokcho Yetgokgan taste and feel?

The oranda here doesn't have a hard, crack-your-teeth crunch. It crumbles lightly with an "asasak" texture. When I took a bite, it was just like the sample. You also get the nuttiness of the nuts and the crispiness of ramyeon-snack pieces (the crunchy noodle snack), so the texture was more fun than I expected.

I also liked that it isn't too sweet. It's gently sweet, so you don't stop at one or two. You eat one... then another... and keep reaching for more, haha. It would be perfect as a Sokcho Jungang Market snack to eat in the car.

If you're looking for a snack to take home from Sokcho Jungang Market

Sokcho Jungang Market has so much food, but if you want a takeaway snack rather than something to eat on the spot like dakgangjeong or squid sundae, Sokcho Yetgokgan is worth a look. The oranda in particular isn't as hard as the old-style kind. It's softly crisp and nutty, so if you expect old-school oranda like I did, it may surprise you, haha. If you're after a Sokcho Jungang Market snack or travel gift, try a sample and pick what suits you 🙂
