Gangnam pork belly grilled by thermometer check: Sansol Sinnonhyeon

In short

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is a Gangwon-style aged-meat Korean BBQ restaurant at the foot of the hill by Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Two servings of pork belly (17,000 won), country doenjang jjigae (9,000 won) and kkakdugi fried rice (10,000 won) came with staff grilling the meat while measuring the griddle temperature with a thermometer, plus aged kimchi grilled right on the plate. The meat quality, grilling service, side dishes and rice dishes all hold up, which is why this is a repeat visit.

Whenever I'm in Sinnonhyeon and think "pork belly today?", I don't even hesitate — I head straight to Sansol Sinnonhyeon, my go-to-again-and-again spot. This is the place I trust for meat quality, side dishes, and rice menus alike, no misses. Stand by.

Where is Sansol Sinnonhyeon, and can you reserve for two?

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is at 15 Gangnam-daero112-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea (ground floor), not far from Sinnonhyeon Station. Walk a short way up the slope and the entrance is right there. Hours are Mon–Fri 16:00–23:00, Sat–Sun 12:00–22:30.

There's a waiting machine at the entrance! Since it's been hot lately, they even set out cold water for people waiting. Naver Reservations works even for two people, so I'd recommend booking ahead if you can.

The place is run with ideas drawn from Gangwon-do, so the interior has a stone-cave theme, and the meat-aging fridge sits right at the entrance. The meat always looks well aged in there, which catches my eye every time haha.

It's a group-friendly place with Wi-Fi, separate men's/women's restrooms, and reservations available.

The side dishes at Sansol Sinnonhyeon

The meat at Sansol is great, but the side dishes are amazing too. Fresh kimchi, pickled vegetables, nabak kimchi (radish water kimchi), herring roe jeot (salted herring roe), myeong-i wasabi (wild garlic leaves in wasabi soy sauce), yuzu radish salad, scallion-beef broth sauce — every single one is delicious, a solid full spread.

Usually we order the set, but this time my husband had eaten lunch a bit late, so we ordered less than usual. Everything's good, but my favorite is still pork belly, so — pork belly for two!

Grilling service: staff check the griddle with a thermometer

At Sansol Sinnonhyeon, staff grill the meat for you entirely, and the downdraft hood sucks smoke away from below so less smell clings to your clothes. They check the griddle temperature with a thermometer and grill it carefully, so it always comes out perfectly cooked — huge satisfaction every time.

Look at that brown color, insane right? I say this every visit, but they grill meat so well I want to take a class on their tips. All the staff grill it well, so I keep wondering what kind of training they get haha.

Country doenjang jjigae, 9,000 won

Thinking a rice dish would go well with the pork belly, we also ordered doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and kkakdugi fried rice, and they were set on the table right while the meat was grilling. The doenjang jjigae tasted deep and savory, like it was made with real country-style soybean paste.

Unlike other BBQ places, this one seems to pack in a generous half-block of tofu from the start. Loaded with soybeans and chunky pieces of meat — you can see why it's ₩9,000.

My husband said as soon as he tasted it, "this tastes savory like cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), doesn't it?" I actually dislike cheonggukjang's smell, but this one felt like a rich, deep doenjang jjigae, so I enjoyed it even more.

Grilled aged kimchi with pork belly, the best combination here

After grilling everything on the griddle, they set it on a rack so it wouldn't cool down. The aged kimchi (mukeunji) side dish gets grilled on the griddle too, then put back onto its own plate — and that's a real delicacy.

The meat looks like something out of a cartoon, the color is amazing. Great-quality meat plus insane grilling skill makes for huge synergy.

My favorite combo is yuzu radish salad, myeong-i wasabi, herring roe jeot, and garlic scapes. Everything's tasty, but I keep reaching for the herring roe jeot and myeong-i wasabi here — those two are my default, paired with whatever else.

Eating grilled corn by hand

I usually don't touch grilled vegetables, but at Sansol I somehow scrape the plate clean every time — it's magic. I even picked apart the grilled corn by hand, quite diligently.

Kkakdugi fried rice, 10,000 won

The kkakdugi (radish kimchi) fried rice that comes out after the meat has an insane look. My husband and I come here often and have tried pretty much every rice menu, and the kkakdugi fried rice here is seriously insane. Almost on the level of a legendary kimchi fried rice spot.

My husband, who insisted he was too full to eat much, kept reaching for the kkakdugi fried rice with his spoon anyway haha. He ate it so happily I felt proud.

Empty plates after finishing the meat and rice dishes

He said he was full, and yet we scraped clean both the rice dish and the meat. The side dishes were so good we finished those too.

Sansol Sinnonhyeon: meat quality, grilling service, banchan, and rice menus — nothing falls short, which is why this Sinnonhyeon regular keeps coming back. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a BBQ spot for gatherings. (5.0/5.0)
